Hey, I'm not a member of TCLA, but I'd figure I'd post here rather than in the public forum.

I'm going to Cape Hatteras, Buxton to be more exact, for summer vacation in July, I think the first week of July. Bringing the cruiser for sure. I was reading somewhere that driving on the sand was banned, is this still true? My dad for one was very angry when he heard the news. He's a heavy duty fisherman and if he's not going to be able to put the "tube bumper" for the fishing rods back on the cruiser and drive out to the point, he's going to be disappointed.:o

But from what I remember, it was from 2007, so I don't know if its still happening.

Also, any good places to wheel at Hatteras? (other than the sand. ;))

Thanks.

You can drive on the beaches today accessed via any open ramps. Check for signs / updates at each ramp for current info.

That may change by summer, no one knows how yet. Many groups are currently working (from every angle) to define access regs that will likely stand well into the future. The general opinion is that some sort of registration / permit system will be created.

No other wheeling than the beaches. There is a short "trail" through Buxton Woods Coastal Reserve but it is nothing more than a low key, sandy road. It is neat to see though as it is the largest maritime forest in North Carolina.

Have fun, OBX rules.

Thanks for the info. I'll keep an eye out for cruisers with the IH8MUD sticker on them, haha. Keep an eye for my cruiser:

Has as OBX Sticker, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Sticker.. USED to have "I'd rather by FISHING ..in Hatteras".. my dad got it at Dillon's corner a LONG time ago, was real beat up so I took it off. I need a new one.

I've been meaning to post this earlier... Here's a little something that as a soon to be founded chapter can do... Quoting from the NCBBA president:

Are you interested in the future of Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreational Area?

The NPS has released a workbook to be completed by the public as a means to be heard during these critical times. You must obtain this workbook either on-line at

http://parkplanning.nps.gov/document.cfm?parkID=358&projectId=10641&documentID=21567

or …by attending a scheduled public meeting. This workbook has 84 pages----don’t let it intimidate you! (I guarantee the environmentalists will fill them out by the hundreds.) The questions are multiple choice with space to enter your personal comments. You don’t have to write letters or give speeches. Work on it as your time allows but be sure it is returned via US mail or internet by January 31, 2008.

The swords are drawn, the fight is on and you must decide to join us or walk away. Please help us maintain our rights of access to our National Seashore.

Sincerely,
Jim Keene, President

Brian, thanks for posting this - it deserves its own thread and sticky so more people see it.

I wonder if Blue Ribbon, United, and all of the others will get involved in this one? /me rolls eyes
