Mine looked like that too actually. I don't know if it was actually tar .it might have been the original gasket that just deteriorated to the point that it was like tar.
Likely. This thing has likely never been apart. Melted in the Arizona sun.

I could definitely take care of that. You looking to go with the mechanical temp gauge?
I tried a new sending unit. It’s all just old stuff. I put a new sending unit in the fuel tank and the gauge still acts up.
None of it hurts my feelings. Oil pressure is all I really care about. My temp works. It just parks itself at HoT when off versus cold.
Why’s the top off in winter? Or is Mississippi in the Southern Hemisphere?
