I was also skeptical about coating my impossible to find 45 tank, but I was tired of always fighting the gas smell. I figured I would give it a try and I’m happy. Also no sediment in my glass fuel bowl at all...

The quality of the shop doing the work, proper cleaning inside the tank and a good product for the coating are crucial.

Just do it!
You won’t be sorry!

Got a chance to look at the tub after pulling the top. It’s in remarkably good condition thankfully.

I was able to chip out all the rust and found only two holes.

Of course all of this will get a thick coat of rust Converter and Fluid Film before reinstalling new @Racer65 gaskets.

I could actually reuse the old ones as they are in pretty good shape.

The PO sealed up the top of the windshield with some tar. Looks like roofing tar. I’m taking a break from chiseling it off.

I am going to reuse the windshield gasket. The newer ones don’t fit quite perfectly on the older trucks and this one is still good.

Mine looked like that too actually. I don't know if it was actually tar .it might have been the original gasket that just deteriorated to the point that it was like tar.

My windshield base gasket was in decent shape too. Also reused it after cleaning and restoring the rubber a bit .

Tub looks good!

Likely. This thing has likely never been apart. Melted in the Arizona sun.

I finally got it all chipped off. I’ve got it in both eyes. Hair. Bloody knuckles.

@FJC Mtneer thanks for the motivation. Still scared of the odometer. If you get bored I’ll fedex mine to you for the gauge mod and odo fix.

I could definitely take care of that. You looking to go with the mechanical temp gauge?

My oil pressure is dead. Temp is spotty. Got a PO added oil pressure with a plastic line I’d love to ditch

The autometer 2348 gauge pod comes with Mechanical temperature and oil gauges (short sweep which will fit the cluster), and a volt meter.

Auto Meter 2348 Autogage Black Console Oil/Volt/Water Gauge https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00062YVSE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ACcgCbQYZWXJX

I used the temperature and volt meters in mine because my oil pressure unit still works.

Haven't looked into how to actually hook up the mechanical oil gauge. Comes with a lot.of various tubes and fittings.

The temperature probe actually fits into the stock location easily (seal it with some pipe dope because it's NPT not BSPT, or get am NPT to BSPT adapter)

I have some spare oil gauges, not sure if they work though. Also it could be your sender unit .

I tried a new sending unit. It’s all just old stuff. I put a new sending unit in the fuel tank and the gauge still acts up.

None of it hurts my feelings. Oil pressure is all I really care about. My temp works. It just parks itself at HoT when off versus cold.

Why’s the top off in winter? Or is Mississippi in the Southern Hemisphere? :p

AFAIK the temp on the early ones is supposed to park at hot when it's off isn't it? When you turn the key on it sweeps to cold, and then as the engine warms it (hopefully) goes where it's supposed to be (mine never did) . That's why you can't pair an early temp gauge with a later sender. They don't work the same way .

It’s 65 degrees today......

But really I temporarily ran out of Cruiser projects and I had already bought the gaskets.......

The tank is retrieved and back in the truck. He welded up the entire 360* of the passenger side. Said he had to MiG it as the Tig was too hot. (Or something)

Dribbled in soldier where the new welds met the old soldier.

Looks great. He welds afterburners and alloys like Hastelloy for the AF so this was nothing to phase him.

Got a real break in the weather today and got the Goat out for some work

It’s a different truck open like this. So much less cramped.

65 degrees and sunny this Christmas Day. Took the Goat back to the shop and cut up some small chunk wood for my sweet little solo stove fire pit my wife got me for Christmas

I’ve been doing the Land Cruiser thing for 20 years. I’ve owned more Cruisers than most, less than some, but I’ve seen many.

This FJ-45 is a survivor. An original. Unmolested.

You know all the terms.
