What brand rust converter is that?

All I did... I taped a piece of grey leather on it and saved millions of bucks :)
meanwhile the seat got some grey tape at some scratches ...

When I picked up the truck Tom said the fuel tank had a leak. I cleaned up all around it yesterday and found no sign.

Anyone that has dealt in these old tanks knows they are easy to remove but getting a petrified vent hose off without breaking always fails so I was pleased that the tank was not leaking as far as I could tell.

Last project of the day yesterday I popped the sending unit off to see if the tank had rust in it.

3 things.

First, there was no gas in it. None. I guess I’ve been driving around on the last sips of gas and what’s in the humongous glass bowl.

Second, the tank was beautiful inside. No rust. Simply remarkable.

Third and last, there was no sending unit gasket so maybe that was the gas smell @JasonH was reporting.

I dumped 3 gallons of non ethanol in it last night and put it to bed

This am there was a wet spot at the back corner of the tank. Bad? No, but let’s fix this while the seats will be away.

Now to get this all out without breaking anything

Nolan, yes these tanks always seem to leak. It's almost always on one of the seems. The lead that Toyota used to seal the seams was the old soft type. You will need some old time lead like we used to have in the barn or shop.

I have had SOME luck with re-sealing the seems with new lead in the affected areas. good prep and cleaning the area can't be understated. . It's just a trial and error.

When the tank is out look closely inside. I have found the gas cap chain in every tank I have cleaned. Just found this in my 66 FJ45. My tank is seeping as well. Im having it sealed this time.

That’s so cool. Thanks. I’ll look.

I’m really happy about the leak becAuse I got in here and cleaned it up and will treat it all

Amazingly good condition under there. The tank looks good. Some surface stuff.

I’ll goop up the seam as good as I can with what I have. Thanks for the tips on the lead. I’ve got lead solder rods. May lay a bead of that first. Can’t even see the crack.

The only thing I broke.

I found one of the rubber plugs for the seatbelt hole. Looks like this one never had seatbelts. The other 3 plugs are still in the drivers side

I left the gas in to see if any of this leaks. Looks like surface only after I polished on it

Man that looks really good. Have you treated with rather rust remover yet? It's amazing how fast everything comes out of the 45 cab.

Funny, I'm in the same place you are with the tank. Mine was in good shape as well but got sent to the shop for coating. Thought I would try that this time around. All surface rust here as well. Mine had seatbelts so no... Plugs. I was able to get the vent tube off without cracking..... Just lucky....

Edit: @copilot do you have a thread going?

The rust stuff I use likes for there to be rust for it to adhere to so I did not take the rust spots all the way down to the metal. I’ll spray the floor and the tank with it and I’m likely going to paint the bottom of the tank just to give it another layer of protection from the external elements. Internally it’s remarkable. Before I finish and put it back in I’ll look for the chain

Thanks for the help I really appreciate it and am going to have lots of questions

Did you have any padding under your tank? I had three pieces of closed cell rubber type material under mine. Not sure what to re-use when I install the tank... I'm not sure what was stock but I would assume what I had was original.

Nolan, no thread going. I was fortunate enough to get this several months ago and have been driving and checking everything out. I have shared a few photos with others here and there. I may start a thread here soon so everyone can benefit from the originality of it like yours. Not many around that are original. I really like your attention to detail for all of us to follow. Plus we all like photos.....we all learn from them.

No on the pads. I guess it survived this long without them so I’ll leave them off on reassembly.

It does have the OEM rear pads which is crazy they survived. Rust inhibitor has cured.

This is tank putty is curing. I know it’s ugly but I’ve used it with great results.

I can sand that down but probably won’t. May cover it with the fiber repair just to be sure.

Remarkable that the retainer screws still on drums. I’ve never seen them. Always tossed.

I think the tank hold straps had a dense felt material as pads. I think. Mine does FWIW.

And I’m thinking of using the Eastwood fuel tank seal kit in mine. Cleans, converts and seals from the inside. My tank has dried chunks of ethanol in it, other than that I think it’s solid. Will need a new gasket for fuel sender (thanks for number Mark) and a new float (I’m going to use one from another sender, not brass though like original). Need to check ohmage first though for functionality.

When did the underseat tool box go away, or is this a fix roof vs. removeable roof thing? My 63 has the box (2 compartments).

That patina is priceless.

Nolan, looks great the way it is. It's hidden anyway. Keep us posted if it doesn't hold up. Are you planning on coating the bed with the rust remover? I want to protect my bed but don't want to line it or repaint it. Also trying to keep it as original as possible.

Also, Paul non of the FJ45 LPB's had under the seat tool boxes as far as know. Just tool rolls and a strap to hold it.

Nolan, curious what your plan is.....leave it the way it is or treat it?

I treated my whole Patina Project with the Rust Inhibitor. It has a lot more paint on it though. I won’t clear it, that’s not the play. I’ve looked at lots of hot rods done this way and it looks like s***.

I am going to do the exterior last. I’m thinking about grabbing a couple of gallons of the spray on and laying a couple of coats down.

The bed is definitely getting it. I want the use this truck a lot to haul stuff.

It will stay clean and dry when not being used so whatever damage has been done is done. It should live 100 more years treated with a cover over its head.
