I heard about this product at COTR and made a note to look into it. One of the guys at COTR said that the Moreflate/Gluetread guys had run the Rubicon with purposely sliced sidewalls that they repaired with Gluetread patches. They of course made a marketing video of that, link below.

I don’t have any first hand experience with this product but I’m willing to spend $50 on a potential sidewall tear field repair that could get me off a trail.

Also, I did sustain a sidewall slash at COTR that didn’t cut all the way through and I just ran with it including the the 14 hours home. I’ve been told, and believe, that as long as you can’t see any of the steel belts or cords the tire is safe to run. When I got home, I just didn’t like the slash, especially when it was at 6 o’clock next to the ground, so I took it to Discount tire. They told me the tire was still safe to run but they were also willing to replace it with my road hazard coverage. I still had to pay for the mount and balance.

Here is what it looked like:

Not sure how well the Gluetread patches would work with a cut through the raised lettering on the tire. Maybe you’d have to take a sanding disk to it to smooth it out before you applied the patch.

Fortunately have never had to use it, but I keep a gluetread kit in my rig (as well as plugs and extra valve stems). I wouldn't hesitate to use it on a gash like that if it were leaking.

I've got a set in my rig but haven't had to use them before. Good point on the raised lettering. The vid you posted (@8:48) has them grinding the lettering down with an angle grinder. I sometimes bring that depending on the type of wheeling we're doing, but good point to have some preparation for this too.

Funny. Didn’t catch that in the video.

I’d seen gluetread used successfully by a friend and had added a bag to my kit a couple of years ago. I ripped a sidewall a couple of months ago and went to use the gluetread. When I tore the bag open it was soaked with the accelerator that appeared to have exploded in the package (temperature fluctuations 🤷‍♂️).
So word of caution, don’t wait to rip the bag open until you need it. I’ll probably buy more because I do know the product can work, but that was quite the bummer for the price of a bag.

I ordered a kit and just received it and opened the pouch. They’ve made a change and no longer supply the accelerant in the kit. You can buy the accelerant separately, but their website talks about it and says you don’t really need it. They also explained that having the accelerant in the same pouch as the glue reduced the shelf life of the glue so they recommend if you have accelerant to not store it in the same place as the glue. Without the accelerant they now say it takes 10 minutes to let the glue set up where with the accelerant it was like 3 to 5 minutes.

Also, the application instructions specifically say to remove lettering and make a flat spot by sanding around the hole in the sidewall.

This is a somewhat common repair in the Earthroamer (and similar) large heavy 4x4 rig world with the huge 42” MPTs

I personally know 2 different folks that have used these in this application, successfully

These rigs are 15k+ lbs so what I would call “the ultimate test”

As with anything, it’s all about the prep

Personally, I’m confident enough in them that I’m half contemplating removing my spare for an aux tank and just carrying one of these kits in addition to my big plug kit I carry
