The glovebox latch on my '88 BJ74 will not open the door. It seems to be doing nothing, not pulling.

Do I pry the door open or is there an elegant solution?

I managed to get a small screwdriver into the latch and wiggle around enough to pop the latch open. There are some fiddley plastic bits in there - I gave up trying to fix it and ordered a new one. About $55 I think. Came up as a forklift part but was correct.
Don't pry it open or you'll be looking for a new door too!

55560-90K00-C0. Current published list price, $34.22.

Thank you Whistler! I will attempt after lunch.

Dan, this means the dealer should be able to order?

The number is live in the US system in spite of the fact it does not belong here. There are none in the country at this time but there are a few in transit from Japan.

There is 2 latches for the 7* series ,the other one has a lock on it. Had one on my 73 series. Handy for throwing the wallet in when you go to the beach etc ,but its not Fort Knox.
I think you need to buy the glove box door also to suit the keyed lock

Often its the catch has come loose and moved out of its ideal postion , but I also had that pin come out that JG mentioned

My problem is I can't see anything to fiddle with.

I'll get a spot light and see if I can discern more details.

Hey,

The catch tends to loosen because of the suspension rattling.

A good excuse to tighten bolts periodically on your Cruiser.

I do know that a locking latch will work in a non locking door, you just can't see or get to the lock. I image they'd probably work the other way around, you'd just have a hole in your glove box door.

Problem solved by... contacting Previous Owner! Push door gently in before pulling on latch.

You would think in all the pulling, pounding and finagling I would have stumbled across that already.

A sure sign its only the catch out of adjustment.

I did find a Japanese road flare inside.

Pic?
