This past weekend my uncle gave me an old Stihl 031 AV saw that my great-grandfather bought new. This great-grandfather heated his house with firewood he felled, sawed and chopped by himself well into his 80's.

Anyway, my plan was to do a light teardown, clean out the gas tank (gelled fuel), carb etc and fire her up.

Anything in particular I should be looking for or doing? Looking at the manual I think this saw has breaker controlled ignition- not something I have messed with in a long time.

That is a very clean looking 031.

After you clean the fuel system, it probably needs the points cleaned and maybe regapped.

In order to get the fuel tank off, there is an Allen head screw under the bar and chain side cover, back by the air filter. You have to clean the sawdust out of it to find it.
