My old, trusty floor jack is not quite up to the task with the height of the Hundy. It has about a 19" max lift which just barely gets the fronts off the ground when all the way up. I can do hillbilly cheat with a block of wood, but that doesn't give me a warm fuzzy. Just curious if there is 'tribal knowledge' here on what is the perfect jack for our rigs? There are so many experts I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask!

Costco has a 3.5T steel one in store right now that is a low profile (good for the ES!) with a max height of about 23" for $90, seems like a good value for home use. Costco Arcan 3.5 ton jack - The Garage Journal Board

What about Jack Stands? Any preference there either? Looking at double-locking like this: Torin Double-Locking Jack Stands — 6-Ton Capacity, Model# T46002A | Jack Stands | Northern Tool + Equipment

23" is not high enough. Look for at least 30" lift height. No need for the super low. Otherwise, that jack looks like an excellent VfM. Keep it for the ES and get a high lifter for the LC.

The stands look good. Get four.

Thanks uHu! Any direction you could suggest for a reasonably priced 30" lift?

I'd scour yard/garage sales, craigslist, etc. for older jacks that look rebuildable.
Much better build quality than newer made in China units and the rebuild process is usually just a matter of replacing a few o-rings.

Ive got that jack and have had no problems with it. I can get our 80 plenty high enough by lifting under the axles.

I think any jack that lifts more than 20" is going to be big and expensive. I do fine with 20".

Most of todays jacks are made in china. Not that great of quality. I did see one on a tv relaity show about extreem car modifications. It is called the ranger. If you want height on the jack of lifting capability, you will need to buy one like this Automotive jacks, hydraulic jacks, floor jacks, garage jack from ASE or find a jack that is 15 years old or older and rebuild it. I often tell people tools that are 20-40 years old are built better then todays tools if thay are made out of metal. Even my sears crome closed/open end wrench I purchaced 15 years ago has more metal on it then todays same wrench.

That's the one I was looking at Phil. I have an old Harbor Freight Special that I bought back in the late 80's that's only good for about 18" saddle height. The 21" Arcan isn't much better, but 3" is better than nothing. Do you use a block to cheat it when you need to?

Rarely is 21" not enough I lift by the axle and jack stand the frame when I need the body up high. Consider a bumper air jack if you find the need to get the body up a lot.

ya, but that will rip the plastic right off the truck!

With my current jack and stands, I can't keep the wheels off the ground after settling back onto the stands. 3" more height would do the trick, although it wouldn't be ideal for working under.

I think at my next house I'll get something like this and live happily thereafter:

Costco - Danmar MaxJax

FWIW the arcan is a kickass jack. I have one and love it. The full length handle, very well made for 90 dollars! It can lift one side of my 4runner off the ground jacking from a crossmember. If you jack by the axles it will lift anything high enough to get jackstands under it.

I would for sure get the Arcan. Its high enough to work on our rigs, but they sill low enough to get under a lowered car. They 'lift pad' thing can be removed if you wanted to ghetto up a tranny adapter, or what have you. There is a grease port on it, it is solid, and the hardware isn't of too low a quality ( i have accidentally left mine in the rain more than once, and it hasn't rusted at all.

Thats my two cents..

Will not mess up your plastic:princess::D extends past your plastic to under the frame rails. Pads on the air jack can be raised if plastic hangs down to low. I have use them in the past and never found a car or truck it would not work on.

On your next house get the room so you can install a real lift that you can stand under...same price:hillbilly:

Thansk for the feedback Yukon. I ended up picking one up along with 4 double-locking 6-Ton Torin stands. So now I have two floor jacks and 6 jack stands. Out to be enough to handle most of my shade-tree duties.

I also picked up one of these Review: Stanley 12-drawer chest + roller cab- $299 from Costco - The Garage Journal Board and I'm VERY impressed with the quality. It is replacing a smaller craftsman box that will now be relegated to a RC hobby box. If you're in need of a rolling chest and you don't have the $$ for a snap-on (or other snob brand :)) then the Stan will treat you well. And this is coming from a guy who is not a Stanley fan.

I'll chime in on the Costco jacks too. I have bought 4 so far. All still work just fine. One is the blue version, works great. Two are the current red model, they work really well too. I also got an aluminum one a while back. It's nice for the Subaru and other light work. But I've used all four to work on lots of heavy stuff and have not had any trouble as of yet.
