I have a Generac XL8000 generator which has 13.5K starting/8K running watts... Can I use it to run my millermatic 185 by using an adapter to the 220V source? Does the generator supply enough current? Any potential damage to my welder? Need to do some welding at my father in law's ranch which has no electricity.

some of the generator specs:
120/240 Volt AC, 30 Amp Locking Receptacle — May
be used to supply electrical power for the operation of
120 and/or 240 Volt AC, 30 Amp, single phase, 60 Hz
electrical lighting, appliance, tool and motor loads.
This receptacle powers 120/240 Volt AC, 60 Hz, single
phase loads requiring up to 7,200 watts of power (7.2 kW)
at 30 Amps for 240 Volts or two independent 120 Volt
loads at 30 Amps each. The outlet is protected by a double
pole rocker switch circuit breaker.

Thank you,
ML

Watts = Volts x Amps

I don't know what the MM185 draws, but my MM175 pulls 19.2 amps so a 20 amp 220 circuit is plenty.

220 x 19.2 = 4224 watts.
I can't imagine the MM185 is much more than that, but 4.2kw is well within the range for your generator.

Edit:

I found the specs. Its 26 amps @ 230v (or 30 amps @ 200v)

5980 - 6000 watts
Still an 8kw continous output generator should handle it.

TS40,

Thanks for your help... I am going to try it this evening.
