Hello guys,

First of all hope you're having a good time in tis Christmas eve.

I hope you can help me out here with an issue.

I have a Land cruiser RJ70 with a Swapped Vortec engine in the Toyota G52 stock transmission, stock transfer, 5.29 gears on the diffs and 34.4" tires.

i like the way it handles in off road conditions but when on roading i don't like the top end speed.

Right know I'm making 55 mph at 2500 rpm's and I want to lower it. I have found that my fifth gear ratio is 0.851 (24\28T) and if I can use this lower ratio gear I can solve the problem. I know I have to rev a little bit when shift to 5th gear but I don't mind that.

Searching for solutions I have found this:

AX5 G52 G58 L52 TRANSMISSION 5TH GEAR SET: 24/28T & 47/33T FITS '84-'02 (G52-5) - https://www.transmissionpartsdistributors.com/ax5-g52-g58-l52-transmission-5th-gear-set-24-28t-47-33t-fits-84-02-g52-5/

If I'm correct they have a 0.702 (47\33T) 5th gear set that fit my G52 transmission.

If that's right I can solve my issue but I'm not Shure if this is correct.

Or do you have another suggestion?

Thanks in advance.

I didn't even know this was available. I would call them and discuss it with their tech dept. Otherwise 4.88 differential gears might be a better ratio. I didn't do the math, that's up to you. ha ha. That 5th gear would definitely be less expensive.

I have 5.29 gears and 35's. It was perfect for my 22RE but, I swapped in a 3.4 and 4.88's would be better for me on the highway.

Post up whatever you decide to do. Happy New Year.

Kind of what @aztoyman alluded to… I recommend maybe stepping down the gear ratio to 4.88’s and don’t mess with the G52 transmission too much. I have 4.88’s on my daily 22RE pickup, and it does great to include going up to 80mph, and it does fine cruising at 3000 rpm+. I have had a good share of G series transmissions, and they’re kind of weak, especially 5th gear only having 1 bearing (versus 2 on an R151, or at least W56’s being a little bit beefier than a G52), and doing a taller ratio on a gear with a bearing only on one side that mr. T did not intend to use will probably prematurely blow 5th gear. I’m also not a transmission expert by any means, but maybe calling Georg at Cruiser Brothers or Marlin Crawler about the possibility of changing out 5th would be more enlightening.

Hello,

A user here changed the gearing on an R151, if I remember correctly. It was a delicate job that involved swapping bearings and shafts, among other things.

I am not sure whether it is possible to replicate this on a G52.

It is easier to change the differentials' gearing to 4.88:1 for better on-road handling.
