I have an 83 toyota pickup 4x4. From all the postings it sounds like I have 4:10 gear ratio stock. I have 31" tires on which I thought screwed up my gear ratio, but according to http://www.4lo.com/calc/geartable.htm it looks like my gearing is "near factory ratio" with the 31" tires. Is this correct? What would be my ideal gearing if not. On another note, should a rookie attempt to replace oil seals/bearings/birfields on front axle on his own? Basically sound like I need a rebuild. Done some work on my truck but nothing like you guys. Thanks, really appreciate all the help.

The short version of the gear answer is....... You would need 4.54 gears to get you back to stock.... There's no such thing as 4.54 gears (that I know of) so you could pick between 4.30 and 4.88....

But there is really no need to regear for that small of a change. I am running 33 inch tires with 4.10 gears and it's not the worst thing.

A front axle overhaul is a long messy job, but not too bad. This should give you an idea.....

it's not that difficult...simple..if u feel comforatble doing it then go for it......if not then dont....read as much as u can on the internet and buy a FSM

Well, there is no 4.54, but there is 4.56 gears available, which is pretty close. 2nd gen 4Runners had them in them from the factory, if you got the large tire package (31's) and a 5-speed. Who knows, might be able to find a couple of junkyard diffs...

But I agree, I wouldn't bother with swapping gears for 31's. I ran the stock 4.10s with my 33's for 3 years, finally moved up to 4.88's this past summer and it was a HUGE help.

Toyato put 4.56 gears in trucks and 4 runners with auto transmissons. Might get lucky and find some in a junkyard. Here is a link to a FSM you can download http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showf...19312&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=14&fpart=1

This depends on year and tire size. I use the following as a rule of thumb but always check the axles codes!

most pre-89 trucks/4runners have 4.10 or 3.90(not to common) with a 5 speed manual; autos had 4.30

some 89-92 trucks/4runner had either 4.10, 4.30 or 4.56 depending on motor, tranny and if they had 31" tires or not.

93-95 trucks/4runners had either 4.56 or 4.88 some had 4.30(not common) 4.56 came with maual and 31" tires, 4.88 came with auto and 31" tires. 4.30 came with 225/75's tires.

Schools out!
