Ok, what the consensus on gear lube?

I'm about to change everything...diff's, tranny, t-case.

What brands to folks like?

I just use whatever they have at my parts store. Comes in a red jug.

I have a jug of that too.

anyone use the Amsoil stuff? I recall someone was really into that stuff in Yankee Toys...Mike Fox maybe?

I'm so over pricey lubricants other than synthetic motor oil. Once you start pulling apart diffs with 150,000 plus miles on them with unknown maintenance you will quickly realize the waste of high dollar yearly change outs of gear lube.

Are there any brands that are bad?

GL-5

I think the answer to the magic question is GL-5. I have done lots of research on this and this seems to be the standard. The brand has no impact and in a manual transmission synthetics are a waste dont throw money away. :deadhorse: 10 miles on the trail is worth a 1000 on the road. :D Thats why I change mine every year and I also look for metal particles or chunks in it.

Thanks for all the input. Based on everything stated, and convenience, I just went with the 5 gallon Coastal gear lube. I figure it will get changed every year, so why spend the big bucks...

Can someone recommend a good hand pump? The ones the local parts store carry are junky little plastic units...

:wrench:

I follow the specs. I dont care what "additive" they are selling. I buy the cheapest, domestically refined GL-5 orwhatever. I use the unbranded cheap stuff at autozone in the black and yellow jug.

I do the same thing with the oil. 10W30, or whatever. I try to buy the best filter I can though. I think its AC Delco or something that is a rebadged higher end filter. I look it up online whenever I need a new filter to remind myself.

I got a hand pump at NAPA, kind of pricey but as long as Jason isn't giving it the Shumate thrust it should be fine.

The $60 one? I was eyeballing that. Work well enough?

Yes that was the one. One day Jason was helping out and pumped it so hard it blew off the hose.

But the end has a nice bend to it and works really well.

That's good to know. I bought a cheaper one at harbor freight and regretted that decision as soon as I tried filling something the first time. I'll have to go pick one of those up.

I have the same pump, came from NAPA. Works very well, very glad I made the investment. Anything to keep that stinky stuff off my hands, clothes, and garage floor is a blessing.

Amazon has it a lot cheaper now (not a surprise).

Amazon.com: Lumax Lever Action Bucket Pump, for 25-50 lb./5 Gal. Pails: Home Improvement
