Well, there has been some reference to these fine trailers in these hallowed halls before so I as I've spent a good many hours lurking & drooling over what you guys are up to, I thought I'd introduce mine to you...
It was a bit of an impulsive buy having browsed around on here & visited a couple of military gear outlets in the UK... I'm not sure if I ended up with quite what I wanted but I'm gaving a play with it to see what can be done with it.
So it turned out to be a 1971 narrow track trailer that I got. The PO had undertaken a resto job on it & painted it to match his Land Rover. The pics below are of his resto work. It had suffered a wee bit since that but he'd done the electric conversion work to civillian plugs etc etc & seemed in relatively good order. It was priced at around the going rate so I bought it...
Pics
The frame:
So far so good - I towed it home a couple of hours on a snowy winters evening & was vay pleased with how it worked in behind Muxley, my 80 series deisel. Muxley is jacked up 4" & rolls on 35's so the trailer is quite small behind him - this worked out well as the PO electrical works was pretty poor & the trailer lights weren't working but the trucks lights were visible above/around the trailer... Anyhoo, we got home with no hassles/incidents
I used him to tow some junk to an offroad meet we have around here... I made a buddy a roof rack & test fitted his RTT on it for his road trip from UK to Cape Town. Rather than fit the tent on Muxley (too tall!!!) I mounted it on the trailer with a couple of bits of pipe from the stores in work - here we are in full expedition trim!!!
Looks great - wish I'd kept on driving!!! Matt & Lorien enjoyed camping in it on top of the trailer all weekend so at least I know its a good stable base if I am ever able to do something similar in the future - more on this later...
The only mod I've made to date is to make some wheel adapters up to get the 80 series alloys on there. I have access to laser profiling facilities through my work so had a set of matching flanges made up to both sets of wheels
The troublesome part was the dust cap/stub on the Sankey axle being wider than the centre hole in the 'Yota wheel so I bought a couple of pipe reducers/tapers/cones & cut them down to match the two together without interfering with things...
Now whilst I can get metal to stick together with the hot stick, my buddy Col is a time served welder so I let him do it to make sure things wouldn't come to bits on the road
Et voila - wheel adapters!!!
Its good to have a pet welder
Mind you, it all goes on the bill at the end of the day...
Ready to receive...
Forgot to take a 'fitted' pic in all the excitement
Wheels on, fatboy stylee!!!
They do stick out a good way now but a nice set of fenders will see to that in the fullness of time. With the wheel sticking out further, I plan to reduce the size of the wheel tubs to improve load carrying space.
I'm having the usual indecision about cutting a door into the back; I think it might be out of necessity as the tin back there is looking a bit corroded.
We currently own a bloomin big caravan that we tow around the place for our holidays - this is where that 'more on this later' phrase comes into play...
Pol, my wife, has decided that she'd like to go back to camping so in a few weeks (October halfterm from school) I want to take us off for a week to see how she likes it before we sell the 'van. We've got an eight birth ground tent to fit us two & our four kids
in so that should be a good indicator of the way forwards for our camping/caravanning...
If I can get a lid on it by then, that would be a help.
Looking forward to running ideas around with you lot & hopefully getting some feedback too.
Anything else??
Oh yeah...

Cheers
Gav
