Can anybody tell me the cons to running propane in my 40. Just read a bunch of stuff from gotpropane.com It says propane is running 1.70 a gallon thats allot better than 3.55 that I am paying right now it also says that it is better for your engine that regular fuel. Question is in my set up does anyone know if propane runs good with high horsepower engines say around 425HP? Man these really has me stoked I want to here feedback please anybody!!!!!!:D

The only thing i know is that propane does burn much cleaner so there for it is better for you motor because it doesn't get the build up of cr*p. I also know that propane in my area is up around 2.50 a gallon. Check out your local dealers to find out how much it really is.

propane has a higher octane rating the pump gas, so you should be able to get more timing out of it..... Not sure about mileage though...

Still 2.50 that is a dollar cheaper and they are supposed to get better mpgs than a gas motor. I am going to call them in the morning. The get for my 40 cost about 1,300 if you work that out on paper, I use about 50 gallons a week so the kit would pay for it self in 6.5 months Very Nice!!!!!!!!!!

105 octane

Is about the average I have been hearing.

Fuel storage is my biggest problem, 10 gallon fuel tank is about the biggest and most common I have found, I am planning on using two.

There is a 22 gallon tank on Ebay in Texas that will go cheap if you can find a place to install it. I sized one up and it won't fit underneath, back seat is for the kids.

I think LT from MetalTech runs a propane powered FJ40. Shoot him a PM, I'm sure he can give you all kinds of gouge.

I run propane on my rig - mostly trail only. It's a 40 series with a BBC396 and one tons, etc. I recurved the HEI distributor and got about 36 degrees total advance out of it with fast springs. I would say I experienced a VERY slight loss of power and mileage with this conversion. The only drawback is carrying enough fuel. I run one large forklift tank and can usually wheel all day on that. I ran one out on the road and got something like 70 miles out of one tank. Not great but not bad considering the rig weighs about 5600# and is running on 42" tires. I get gas delivered to my house for just over $2 per gallon right now (was about $1.90 before the cold weather hit) so any loss in mileage is more than countered by the fuel cost savings. Long story short - wheelin rig = do it; daily driver = work out the fuel capacity and refueling issues before deciding.:D

I would talk to Cary at Propane Conversion Kits and see which kit is best for you. I know he has the 450 cfm mixer that will handle high horse power v8s. If you have a higher compression engine around 10:1 or 11:1 your engine will love propane since it is 110 octane.

I would check to see if you can run propane on the road I remember reading that it is illegal in California. Otherwise I personally love propane off road, poor mans version of fuel injection, clean burning, and no fuel pumps to go out on you :grinpimp:

it is not illegal in Cali.

with 425 hp you would need to double up on mixers or run one of the new huge technocarbs.
