I just made a long drive in my 60 (towing my offroad trailer) and can report on gas mileage with the following set up...

FJ60 with stock gearing, 31X10.50 MT/Rs, H55F 5 speed.

I drove from Parma, ID to Winnemucca, NV - 13.2 MPG (240 miles - 18.1 gallons) This was down highway 95 through Jordan Valley.

From Winnemucca, NV to Dixon, CA - 15.5 MPG (320 miles - 20.5 gallons)

Runs more efficiently at about 2300 to 2500 RPM.

That is truly my next big thing to do to my 60. Its at the shop here getting a super tune up (I have no time due to work to do it myself). Then its getting painted and lifted with new rims and tires. After that stuff, it will be the holy grail ----the h55f. Looking forward to it.

thats cool, i going to buy the h55, Toybox, and Orain then drop it in all at once!

How much did the trailer weight?
Thanks for the report. This gives me hope that my 60 will get better milage than my 40. It gets 12mpg with a tail wind.

I can't believe its so high with the 5th gear. You sure there weren't other factors like a good tail wind?

That's the numbers... Winemucca to Reno is pretty flat. After Reno, the drive is uphill over Donner Pass... then pretty much downhill to Sacramento. Cool weather made a difference, also.

I believe that, on the highway at least, the mileage could be even better when not towing 600 lbs. and an extra axle on the trailer. I may be able to get this thing tuned to the 16 to 17 MPG range... maybe.

Main thing to tune is the right foot.

Mike,

Did your odometer actual read 320 miles or did you take into acount your odometer being off with this?

This is good to know. I am putting in a 5speed soon.

I don't know what happened here.. It triple posted that last one..

Kevin:

I got the mileage off of map software routing. The actual mileage may hve been a little more than I indicated, but it's pretty close, I think. The speedo is off with the 31" tires.

On flat ground I am running about 2300 to 2500 RPM, 31" tires with slightly less than 40 lbs. air (cold). I am starting to drive more in 5th - the peak torque is about 1800 RPM, so downshifting too early has a penalty attached. I run in 5th down to about 1800 RPM, then shift down for grades. Seldom run more than 2500 in 5th - about 70+ MPH.
