For the past two tanks, doing both city (mostly) and freeway driving I have been getting 15.3 miles per gallon!

Not bad....not bad at all.

I must retract all my complaints about the gas mileage. It seems that it is just seeming to go through gas like crazy because of the amounts of time I have been filling up.

The filling up issue is a result of the SMALL gas tank they give!!

Another topic, Another time....

Don't forget that your mileage should improve as the engine breaks in.

Well it sure feels like it.

'cause you're only getting 15mpg.

I find that the higher the gas prices go the more frequent my visits are to the gas station.

Amen....one day I will get my larger tank...

Is that by the computer? The nav is always optimistic. Best way is to calculate it by hand. I find I can only get 16mpg or a tad better w/ 5 passengers in So. CA driving...lots of steep hills in South OC, and it seems there's a traffic light every 100 ft!

Yes it is the onboard computer display. After no using the freeway for the past 2 tanks it has redone the estimation and is at 11.9 mpg

Seems more realistic.

Calculate it out by hand and see what you get in comparison. The problem is the nav calculates the instantaneous mpg. I'm not sure how it computes it over time. Maybe it just averages those values. What you really want is to see how many miles you drove since the last fill up vs. how many gallons you are filling up. Do this for maybe 5 tanks or so to get an idea of your real fuel economy.

I believe So. CA has less gasoline than AZ gas, too. While driving in So. CA last week, I averaged exactly 16mpg driving mostlyon the freeways w/ 4 adults, 1 child. While going home w/ a fully loaded car, we set the cruise to 70mph through the desert, I calculated 15.9 mpg at the fill up at Quartzite about 20 mi east of Blythe (halfway point), no wind. Then from Quartzite back home, we set the cruise for 72-73mph, got 17.6mpg, no wind. In both scenarios, the load was the same in exactly the same position in the car. The only difference was we drove faster in AZ and used AZ gas. In both cases, I try to put about 1/2 gal more gas in after the pump clicks. Maybe the pumps are calibrated differently or whatever, but I wouldn't expect that much of a difference. 10% is 1.8 gallons of gas on a 18 gal fill up!

It calculates the avg per gallon on every tank. Everytime I open the gas cap it resets it to 0. So it is an average per gallon per tank.

does your gas get calculated by the Nav screen? is there a little line that goes form 0-90 MPG and it constantly adjusts? I think this was the latest gen system. It is liek that on the RX350's they give as loaners

There is that...but that is not the screen I am talking about.

There is a screen that I can get when pressing the disp button.

It says:

Avg Per Gallon:
XX.X

and the X's change while driving.

There are 2 things California gas maybe different from Arizona: 1) we only get up 91 octane 2) I know they put methanol? ethanol? during winter. Not sure about AZ but I know in Nevada, 93 octane is available and on some cars, you can feel the difference performance wise and mileage wise.

There's more than that actually.

Thanks to CARB, CA has several different blends of gasoline at different times of the year. These blends are intended to minimize pollution based on atmospheric and weather conditions which are prevalent during different seasons. Unfortunately, while these blends do supposedly improve air quality, they affect gasoline performance.

Any update on the mileage? I saw Motorweek and they had a long term 08 Tundra Crew Max with the 5.7l and the mileage had suprised them at 17.4 mpg. They thought it would be much lower. I was wondering if the new Cruiser was getting closer to 16 instead of 13?

Thanks,

It is closer to 13-14. I was also wrong on the tank size. It is 20 gallons not 25 like I thought.

According to the toyota website the tank is 25.4. Have you ever checked it on just freeway driving?? What is the 13-14, a mix of city and highway or just city??
