Thinkin' about getting me a Garmin Nuvi 500. Does anyone on here have one and how do you like it?

Bumpity bump bumper-roo

I asked Santa for one this Christmas

...waiting to hear the observations of others...

Yeah, I put one on the list too. Hope Mrs. Santa Clause takes note.

I've had one for over a year. I like it just fine. I don't have a lot to say about it other than it's a nice basic unit with a good battery life (if you need that) and is pretty rugged.

I totally dig mine, but I would consider myself to be a real basic user.

I use it for hiking and driving. I like the way it leaves a line where you have gone so you can find your way back.

Mine does not speak the street names, but I here there might be an upgrade for that. Maybe the new ones do it.

Here are some screen shots

Oh, and if you plan on walking around with it on hikes get a screen protector - I scratched my screen the first few weeks I had mine.

just got a nuvi 1490.
couple of idiosyncracies that can be worked around. Overall a very nice unit.

Imagine most of the Nuvi are very similar. can do quick comparos on Garmin's site. To me, the spoken features are really important safety wise (if somewhat annoying).

do check all the free maps for Garmins available out there (thread someplace here)

Thanks for the input so far!

I got the 550 which is the same as the 500 except for the maps it came with. I've since added the topo's and blue-line maps.

Nice size, decent features, the auto-routing is a little wonky here in Alaska but I know its more precise in the lower 48..

Its the only real Navigation type unit that you can upload the TOPO, Lakes & Rivers, Blueline maps onto, which is a pretty cool feature if you want 1 gps for mulit-uses.

I took it rafting with me last year, and have a RAM mount to put it on my motorcycle (although the screen is not that great in bright light, hard to see it on the motorcycle, gotta work on that.)

My first garmin with their newer menu interface, I'd give it 4 stars, its not quite as intuitive imo as the eMap and 76 series I was used to but it works fine..

Yep, its a software update that came out last spring.

One thing I was wondering, is that while underway, can you scroll the map to something other than where you are? If you see some terrain to the west of you, can you click on it and scroll while moving, or is it always going to have you centered on the map screen?

That one is easy.
You just tap the screen and it takes you to the topo map and you just move it around by sliding it with your finger.
