Thanks.

I’ve aborted this whole idea and ordered one of these from @goooooo to try, will report fitment

Excellent choice! I'm very happy with mine on my 2013LC200. The entire experience with Leather & Dirt was very enjoyable - from the professional presentation with the product packaging, the clear and simple instructions, to the clean look of the final installation. Highly recommended.

Here's a quick and dirty pic of mine:

The 18 nuts/bolts assure it is solid as a rock! Thanks @goooooo

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the product, and thank you for sharing your experience!

My dash accessory mount from @goooooo arrived today.

Looks like a much cleaner option and even includes the right screws and such..

Now just waiting for the new speaker cover to arrive and I’ll post some install pics.

Stoked

@Boston Mangler , any feedback so far with the Leather and Dirt offering? The low heat resistance of only 144 degrees gives me some pause as we’ll be there next month in the Phoenix area. I too gave up with trying to make the Gamiviti setup work.

Yes. Posted a bunch of pics on my build thread.

The Leather and Dirt offering is much cleaner, much easier to install, looks like it belongs there and is plenty stout.

The heat thing is really a non issue for me, as if I’m not in the vehicle I always use a sunshade at all times (I’m in San Diego)

Didn’t get a discount, paid full price, just a happy customer that is glad I found this after the debacle with the other one.

I like the leather & dirt one but seems overpriced for simple filament printed design. I almost bought the desert one at 90 bucks then saw they charge 15 more dollars for shipping. Thing can’t weight more than a couple grams. Might just buy my own printer.

Lame comment man

I’m going to venture to guess you don’t have first hand 3d design and 3d printing experience

I have a 3D printer at my shop and the skills to make this.

It’s worth $100 to pay for an existing product all day long to save the time and design trial and error. What’s your time worth?

I’m totally happy to support a mud member coming with new ideas and products to fix flawed in other ones and putting the time in to figure it all out.

I love to see @goooooo type of innovating. Makes the cruiser world a better place

If you buy a 3d printer to make your own, pleaseeee document the process 🖕🏼😂🖕🏼

I'm the owner of Leather&Dirt, and I appreciate your feedback on the price. I acknowledge that my product is not priced on the cheaper end, and it is also not intended to be. Let me explain:
  1. The Land Cruiser is not the most popular off-roader, at least in the US. Therefore, I am unable to achieve the scale or volume needed for cheaper mass-production methods.
  2. I’m not selling the plastic filament and the print time. The price reflects the design, engineering, and testing efforts. To make the very first dash mount for the LX, I created at least 20 prototypes just to get it right (fitment, rigidity, surface finish, etc.). For the Desert version mount, I had to redesign the structure to suit the new plastic materials. All this work takes a huge amount of time, so I have to price the product based on my time and the design/engineering efforts.
  3. I understand that many in the 3D printing community favor open sourcing and design sharing, pricing products based on print time and material cost. However, I don’t consider myself a 3D printing hobbyist. For context, I have a full-time job in a design/engineering-related field, and in my experience, intellectual property (design, engineering, or ideas) holds significant value. Frankly, if every business priced their products based solely on manufacturing costs, we likely wouldn't see many products made in the US anymore.
  4. Oh, and regarding the shipping cost: The entire product has to be extra thick, so it definitely weighs more than a couple of grams. Also, did I mention that they all come with color-matching mounting hardware?
Here are some of the prototypes/trashes and what they eventually became:

I appreciate you being civil and transparent with your process, I wasn’t trying to backhand your time or R&D, it’s just a little much for me (115 to my door). Cheers.

I appreciate the detailed explanation here. I had previously purchased an item made via 3D printer and thought the cost was a bit high. However, now I can better understand what goes into it.

Regarding “trashes” for producing items, I can totally relate: I do leather work, and will have two or three junk versions of whatever I make which I’ve discarded for whatever reason. Materials are pricey, and there’s always a cost for someone’s time and effort.

Also, did I mention that they all come with color-matching mounting hardware?

Well... except the grey "Desert" version which comes with the same black hardware as the "Melty" version I had to replace. Not really understanding what is "color-matching" about black hardware on a grey product.

I guess if you guys are mounting a lot of stuff, this mount with the curve makes sense, but if you just need a few things, the YakAttack GearTrac can be purchased in metal and at about 1/4 the cost. Also, can get it in polymer and a few different colors. And 2 options as far as external 2 rows of screws or internal 1 row of screws. Probably a bunch of knock off stuff on Amazon as well.

You are right, I'm still in the process of sourcing some new hardware for the grey one... I will let you know when I have an update.

Please do - I will hold off replacement installation until I hear from you about appropriate hardware 👍

I had thought of something similar. I have some 1/2 height 10 series t slot rail. And i happen to have a few short pieces laying around.

But this extrusion you posted seems like it would be easier to mount than the T slot. I definately like the idea of metal vs some plastic that may melt in these hot SW climates.
