Has anyone here ever had the issue of their 1fzfe stalling while climbing a steep hill while off-roading? Recently in Moab my Lc decided to stall while climbing a steep obstacle and almost ended badly , it’s now happened 4x and am concerned as to what the issue may be ? It’s not a slow stall, just shuts off and starts right back up.. any info y’all got helps !!

A sudden cutoff like that makes me think it’s an electrical problem. Have you checked the harness near the EGR? I believe that can often be a source of intermittent electrical issues.

Are your motor mounts in good shape? If not, they could be allowing the motor to move when you go uphill, causing the electrical issue.

I would start wiggling harnesses while it’s idling, and see if you can get it to die.

After it stalls, do you have to move back to flat ground to restart? Or will it start right back up on the hill?

Just some thoughts.

I’m going to dive in deeper today, I noticed the gas gauge would stay on when the key was off , every now and then the idle would bounce around , I changed the filter with an OEM one very recently and i bought a new fuel pump in Moab to have as a spare , it made it back to town last night okay , I’m going to check wiring and relays today. Thanks

Not with a Toyota, but my old Bronco used to trip the fuel cutoff switch everything you went over 20 degrees or something.
Was a royal PITA to deal with on the trail, so I just replaced it with a manual kill switch.
Sure the 80 doesn't have something like that?

As David surmised correctly, you may have an intermittent connection issue near the EGR pipe. The 80 forum has loads of pics of repairs by fixing the melted insulation and wrapping the bundle with heat resistant tape.

Try to recreate this issue by powerbraking the engine while stationery in one spot. By powerbraking, the engine will rotate under load just enough to pull on the harness and break the connections. If you can recreate it, then it's probably the wiring harness by the EGR.

I tried that, couldn’t recreate it , the only time I can recreate it is on a very steep hill... I changed the fuel pump, now I need to find a hill steep enough to see if it will still stall...

Hmmm, that's interesting. I first encountered this issue while climbing a steep hill using 4low. But, I was able to re-create the issue by trying to drive up a sidewalk while powerbraking. I did have couple of melted insulation on injector wires, which would cause a severe hesitation and stall.

While you had the fuel pump out, did you check on the famous "wire chafing against the fuel pump holder" issue? I didnt' have this issue but acted proactively.

I did , wires were in good shape , I haven’t pulled the insulation on the harness next to the EGR yet , this issue is very difficult to recreate , however I was able to recreate it in Moab on the base of lions back multiple times . Even on video .

Lions back?...is it open again!? I'm guessing you're talking about Hell's Revenge, I hope I'm wrong;)

Lion's back is indeed closed, for what I think is going on 12 years? He maybe thinking of Baby Lion's back, which I think is on the trail Fins and Thinks, but not sure.

Oops , yes baby lions back , either way it happened on multiple trails including fins and things .. I’m thinking there’s no issue and I just began to roll back causing the engine to stall itself , didn’t even know it was possible to stall an auto ..
