I am new to the 80 series market, and after browsing MUD, have yet to find any opinions on the two different engines offered in the 80 series. Is the 4.0 liter more reliable? Do you notice a significant power increase with the newer 4.5 liter? Which has the best track record on the trail? I have never heard much of a comparison between the two engines. This tells me that both are sufficient for the 80 series... am I right? In other words... should finding a newer 80 with the 4.5 liter be a priority? The factory lockers is a given, but I just wasnt sure about the engine... any input would be appreciated.
thanks,
keith

91-92 = FJ80 = 4.0L 3FE engine

93-97 = FZJ80 = 4.5L 1FZ-FE engine

If its lockers your after your going to end up with the 4.5L IFZ-FE engine as factory lockers were not available on 91-92 models.

The 3FE vs. 1FZ-FE is a ongoing, good natured debate on this forum. Its important to know that they are both GREAT engines. Long running and pleanty of low end power. Im sure you would be happy with either.

Good luck in your search and keep us posted.

Keith,
At the risk of being accused of "3FE Hatred", I will give you my opinion.

The 3FE engine is the 4.0l and it is a derivative of the F and 2F engines with the addition of fuel injection. By current engine standards, it is NOT a modern engine. By this I mean it does not have the sophistication and advanced engineering that the 1FZ-FE engine has. Al head, DOHC, advanced engine management ECU.

The 3FE has much less HP (~25% hp less IIRC) The 3FE is a rugged workhorse engine with a lot of low end torque (though much less torque than the 1FZ-FE.) They are very durable engines when well maintained.

The 3FE engine was designed for the 60-Series. The 60-Series is considerably smaller and lighter than the 80-Series. This is one of the main reasons the FJ80 (80 w/3FE) is considered underpowered. For the US market, the 80-Series was supposed to get the 1FZ-FE engine in 1991 but (rumour has it) the engine was not ready when the 80 came to the US so Toyota engineers refit the early years with the 3FE. Beginning in 1993, the FZJ80 came with the 1FZ-FE engines in the US market.

There are "off-the-shelf" turbocharger systems for the 1FZ-FE. AFAIK, there are none for the 3FE. There is a factory (TRD) supercharger for the 1FZ-FE. AFAIK, there is none for the 3FE.

In my humble opinion, selecting an 80 with the 1FZ-FE engine should be a priority if you want and/or need the significant additional power.

Well said, no flame from this guy.

HOWEVER, there are a few issues with the 1FZ-FE that the 3FE does not have (or, at least, not as often).

1. Blown headgaskets

2. (From the FAQ) PHH - Pesky Heater Hose. "A 100 mm length of 16mm (5/8 inch) straight heater hose located at the extreme LH rear corner of the 1FZ engine cylinder head. So named because it is not the easiest thing to change-out even under ideal conditions."

I think I'll stick with my simple tractor motor and bus tranny.

1ZFE

Go with the 1FZ-FE motor mine has 307000 miles and still running strong.

Errr, wellllll, uhhhh, we don't like to speak of these things.... at least not in public and not where the 3FE guys can catch us talking about our dirty laundry.

hey thanks everybody... sounds like i will be looking for the 1FZ-FE. But if I stumble on the right 80, no rust, under 150k, right price...ect., ect. and it happens to be the earlier model with the 3FE... then all bets are off...lol

2F = Tractor Motor

3FE = Fuel Injected Tractor Motor

1FZ= Higher Horsepower Fuel Injected Tractor Motor

All three are tough as hell, and the differences show the progress of design.

Each have advantages depends on your intended use.

Hey, now I never said it was a bad motor...

Pick a TLC and you'll never go back.
