Getting ready to pull trans/transcase for new clutch, rear main etc. Question is, what's the best way to support the engine w/ the trans out, w/o crushing the oil pan?

TIA-

I've had my transmission/transfer out a few times and I've never supported the engine. However, the last time, I bent the bracket on the carburetor that secures the linkage, so I would recommend you disconnect the carb linkage.

I've read that a hydraulic jack used in combination with an old 4 by 4 works really well. I wouldn't leave it unsupported, but if it works, then go for it.

No issue with crushing the oil pan. That pan can support the entire weight of the motor no problem. Put a chunk of wood between the pan and the jack to spread the load but otherwise have at it.

DEFINITELY support the rear end of the engine. And yes, the oil pan is up to it.

This seems right. I don't see how just the front mounts would be able to support all the weight of the engine but on the other hand a few of you said you have done it w/ success.

I'm going to be changing out the front tranny seal as well, it's starting to leak really bad. Have any of you ever done this? I'm not sure what's involved, or what I'm getting myself into. The FSM doesn't really cover this, unless I missed it.

Question is am I going to need a seal puller to remove this or will normal tools work i.e. screwdriver?

My recommendation would be to change all the seals associated with the transfer case while you've got it apart. You need gaskets anyway and seals are not that much more money. I don't know what you mean by the "front seal", the front output shaft or the front seal between the transfer case and transmission (refered to as transmission rear seal in the FSM). When you replace the latter, pay attention to the way the old seal is installed. Because this is an intermediate seal between transmission and transfer, its installation into the front half of the transfer case seems "backwards" compared to other seals. There is also supposed to be an upgraded double lip seal for this application.

I put a 4 by 4 from one leaf pack to the other and had about a 1 inch gap and lowered the engine down on to it. It only works if you are SOA though.

From SOR #57 is the seal I'm talking about. After pulling the cover off the bottom of the bellhousing and searching for the source of my leak I suspect this is where I'm leaking oil, it definetly smells of gear oil and it has pretty much gottin all over my clutch. After researching a little it looks like I should be able to just slide the seal off the shaft.

Does this help?

The front seal is easy to do once the tranny is separated from the bellhousing. The tranny front cover is bolted to the trany, the seal is pressed in the front cover.

Thanks 60wag, would you recommend a seal puller for this job?
