Futon frame roof rack

Would a metal frame futon make a good platform for a roof rack?

I was thinking about taking a couple of metal futon frames and turning it into a roofrack. Has anyone done this before? I was thinking of cutting off the long side of each half frame and then welding the two together. I have a confer roof rack, but its kind of a small box. Two halves of a couch size futon would be longer and of course the width could be dictated by cutting the two halves to size before putting them back together. What do people think a low cost idea like this?

Problems I see arising:
1. Metal quality- the metal used in the frame would be low quality or weak to either weld or hold a few hundred pounds of gear.
2.Mounting-need to fab mounts to attach the support legs. My rig is an FJ60 with solid rain gutters so multiple mounting points wouldn't be an issue.
3. No side walls- If things are tied down and under a heavy tarp who needs sidewalls? I keep thinking that properly affixed with straps were good enough for pack animals, so why not on the top of a vehicle.

Full length Roof Rack...

Or we could save you the time... we make a full length rack like you are talking about, and it uses much stronger materials. You can find it on our big blue LX450. It is listed on our site as the XLC80 rack.

This is almost as good as the soloflex bumper.

Throw in a Thighmaster Hi-Lift Jack...

If this is the course you want, then go for it, but I doubt it's going to be that great of a structure to base it off of.

Hardcore section? Seriously?

Terrible idea. These futon frames are very thin material. No way it'd be able to hold substantial weight without substantial reinforcement. Sell the futon as a whole and use the $ to buy scrap metal to make your roof rack.

If you utilized the mattress, it could be the base for a RTT !:grinpimp:

Any idea what the futon frame is made out of?
aluminum? Steel?

The steel tubing I use for roof racks is actually pretty thin..

U mayk nauw!

Just sleeve the butt joints or at least cut them at a steep angle.

Futon roof rack, fxxx yeah.

The tube used in folding sofas and futons isn't just thin, it's one step above beer cans.

All my futons have been wood :D

3rd row seating for a 60?

Huummmm, you could be a trend setter, wood roof racks.

There was a guy in town with a really ragged Grand Cherokee here who had a slab of 1" plywood bolted to his OEM roof racks.
Been done, and it was evidently a "Jeep thing" 'cause I really didn't understand.

I like these...
