My fuel guage has been giving me trouble ever since this summer. I finally replaced the fuel sender unit in the tank. But it still does not work right. The old one would only drop down to about a half a tank then stop. Got worse the more I fiddled with the sending unit. So when I put in the new sending unit the guage did not even move from below E after I filled the tank. I know I wired it in right because the guage moves up and down when i pull the fuel pump out of the tank and manually move the float. As I replaced it back into the tank it reads correctly but as I take a ride it suddenly drops below E I am so fustrated now at it. I have no clue what is wrong with it. Any ideas?

Is it possible that the float is damaged i.e. has a whole in it preventing it from swimming or that it has to much friction applied to it so jamming it

The float is new. As for jamming I thought of that. But not sure if it is.

Maybe it is hitting something inside the tank. There is a baffle that surrounds the fuel pump bracket, could it be bent up?

I wonder. I did take a hit to the tank. But that still does not explain why it reads the correct level then drops below E all of a sudden. Then as the thank gets low the guage will rise slightly.
