Hey folks. Stuck up a creek without a paddle. In Moab and the jerry rigged fusable link am1 that the previous owner put in melted. Not looking good trying to find a replacement OEM. Beno took a look and no go. Has someone got one or knows what the right gauge + fuse to use to replace it? Since this thing protects my wiring harness. Rather not guess. It had. 60 amp Busman fuse on it and what looks like 12 gauge. I'm trying to find out if my dual battery setup is the issue as it was fin until the trip and the fridge drawing from the second battery. Maybe too much current to charge the second battery. Still looking at what is downstream from the am1 to see where the draw could be comming from. Thanks for any help stuck in Moab until this gets resolved

Maybe too much current to charge the second battery

Exactly.

Alternators and fusible links are not designed to charge dead batteries. The current load can be too high for too long. That's how I cooked mine.

To get you back on the road, just jury rig a big regular fuse in.

Actually, my FL burned out on a long trip away from any chance of replacement and I just hard wired the Alt output directly to the batt. No FL.

Left it like a that for 15 years.

Now of course that isn't a recommended procedure, and was pretty dumb... But no harm came to anything.

Finally got around to fixing it.

Hope your trip home goes smoothly!
As I was driving home I was thinking about the problem and thought something like a 1 or 0.5 ohm resistor inline could be a possible answer to managing the current in the wire to charge the second battery. If you could keep the current under maybe 40amps it might increase the life of the circuit, but it would slow the charge rate of the 2nd battery.

Hey Andrew ,

Scrapdaddy here, we were your sight seeing buddies coming out of the trail, in the 55. Hofefully you are on the road by now. I never had a good chance to talk to you about the troopy! What an awesome rig. Good luck and see you out there next year.
