As already mention, run the recommended octane, which is 87.
Anything else is a total waste of money and won't improve performance or increase mileage at all.
Higher octane gas simply burns slower and is harder to ignite.

If you're having pre-ignition (knocking) with 87 octane under normal conditions, then, simply, you've got something wrong. Timing advanced too far, carbon buildup in the cylinders/piston tops, wrong temperature range spark plugs, etc.

I run the 10% Ethanol blend. 90-91 Octane. But not for the Octane value.

Ethyl alcohol has about 90% of the energy per gallon as the 87 no lead that it gets mixed with.

Here, Ethanol 91 Octane is $0.20 a gallon cheaper than 87 no lead.

So... ~99% of the energy, 94% of the cost per gallon ~ 5% cheaper per mile. It has nothing to do with the Octane though.

Since we in the US are securely shielded from any real information about the gas we buy, I buy whats cheap. It all comes from the same truck/storage facility/pipeline/hole in the ground.

YMMV
funny in AZ the quality control is so bad that many times you get 91 oct out of a 87 oct pump. Go figure... I learned this by talking to a guy that does the testing. if the pump says 87 then it has to at least be 87. They often dont care as long as it meets the requirements.
