what does it separate and what happens if I take it plug it ?

Can anybody tell me...

Thanks in advance

it seperates water and dirt from fuel...the water/dirt are heavier than diesel and stay at the bottom...it has a float inside that rises as the water/dirt accumulate and activates the filter light(*im new to this so someone might be able to confirm)... i wouldnt remove it or plug it...i just cleaned mine and it was full of crap so it is obvious that it is doing something...

Are you talking about the odd plastic thing in the RR corner, or something that looks like it might a filter in the fuel supply line?

If the odd plastic part, what it does is separate liquid fuel from fuel vapor. The liquid fuel runs back into the tank and it allows some of the fuel vapor to condense. Removing it means that all of the vapor and liquid that comes out of the tank vent has to be dealt with by the charcoal canister. I'd leave it in the system, but it can be moved to a more out of the way spot as long as the orientation stays the same.

Arty.. thanks but I was referring to the Gas engines...

NTSQD....yes that's what I was looking at....
Im having issues with my engine swap...it runs great but its throwing a p0446 code having to do with vent purge solenoid... ... I play with it and see how it goes...

Manu...

OK, I forgot for a moment what engine we were dealing with here.

With an OBD II engine you need to exactly duplicate the whole fuel system (lines, tank, vent, canister, all of it) as it was in the donor or the vehicle that you are patterned after. It may well be that this engine's emissions system doesn't need that device. The ECU controls the fuel tank venting and anything that deviates from the original design is very likely going to cause problems.

It's been a while since I went through all of this on the YJ from Hell & it's LS1/4L60E swap. What I recall is that the tank is vented to the cannister, and the ECU controls the cannister purge (venting), and that there is NO other venting in the system. Before you remove it, try plugging all of the hoses that go to it and see if you still get the code or not. Depending on exactly how Toyota plumbed things, you may need to sort out what can just be plugged and what needs to be hooked to something else in the system.
Bottom line is that the cannister purge valve has to be the only fuel tank vent.

Yeah....I figure that is what I need to do..but wanted to check if my tank is not going to build too much pressure...by plugging all of them lines (5) of them.......well except the one going back to the evap canister...

YJ......eh !!! :confused: NEVER !!!!:steer::steer:

Thanks........!!:beer::beer:

Hey Frank,

As ntsqd said he is correct. Also remember that a code can occur if you didn't click your gas cap correctly on an OEM truck/car.

snip......

YJ......eh !!! :confused: NEVER !!!!:steer::steer:

Thanks........!!:beer::beer:
Worked on it, wasn't mine TG! That thing would smoke the rear 35's from a 20 mph roll-on going up an on-ramp and be going way too fast for a YJ at the top!!

Welcome!

I can smoke my tires with my 2F......It happens when I brake hard!:doh:

Hey Frank, Do you have the purge line connected? It's supposed to run from your EVAP canister all the way to the front of the truck. There's a little EVAP purge valve that sits on the top front of your Vortec. You may not have it connected to anything...

Dude good to see yah around here...how are them swaps going ?

Im slowly getting there Eh....
Still that freagging code is not going away...
I found out a few days ago that there was a service call on the evap purge solenoid....something about getting plugged... and it being an common problem on chubbys...
Will continue to work on it and post on my swap once I pass the ref.....

You got brakes....then !!!

Dylan.. I got the purge valve from the engine connected to the evap canister. Solenoid at the rear plugged to the ECU and evap canister and the third hose going from the gas tank to the evap canister.... to recycle the vapors back to the engine.... so Im going to plug the fuel separator mimicking a GM tank...

That sounds about right, Frank. And I hope someone else can chime in here if I'm mistaken...at this point, if you are plugging the fuel separator, it's useless and taking up space. Which may mean that you can get rid of it. That should give you some extra space in that passenger side rear compartment so you can hide extra booze and nudie magazines back there!

I was thinking the same, but thot that it should be tested first. Nothing sucks worse that having to put back in something that you thot you didn't need.

[hijack]That YJ also had a 4:1 Dana 300, a HP D60 rear, HP D44 front, both w/ ARB's & 4.56's, all hung on the now extinct Warn linkage/coil-over suspension kit and I fab'd an all stainless mandrel bent exhaust system for it (only wanted to that job once!). All in all a pretty trick piece, for a YJ....[/hijack]
