Fuel sending unit

Hey guys anyone have trouble with their fuel snding unit? Mine is screwy it works when I fill up then at about 3/4 it drops to below the empty line and stays there till I fill up again. It first started acting up in the fall driving on the highway going from full to 1/4 to full to 1/2 all within minutes I took of the access plate and cleaned up all the contacts but it didn't seem to help. Any help appreciated. Vehicle is a HJ-61 with 12 h/t if that makes a difference

You could take it out and check ohms acrost it's range of motion and look for dead/flat spots. Don't have my FSM handy, but there should be specs in there.

Yeah take it out and test for ohms. Also check the float for holes. Small holes. Very small holes.

What do you mean by small holes?

I think he means pin holes, like those that can happen in a toilet float, which will keep the toilet float from floating.

My problem is my fuel gauge always sits around the 3/4 mark .When I pull the sending unit out of the tank and manually move the float the fuel gauge operates correctly. When I put the sending unit back into the tank it stuck around 3/4 mark no matter how much fuel is inside the tank. I have cleaned the electrical contacts/connectors and I also connected one wire directly to one of the six small screws (that fasten the sending unit to the tank) for better connection. I also tried replacing the sending unit with a spare. Any idea's on what else could be causing my problems?
