I'm having some problems with my fuel pump relay I think but need feedback. My 62 stopped running so I did some checking and determined all was well except fuel supply. Being 30 miles from pavement in Moab complicated matters but that's another story. Checked the usual wires in the drivers rear panel which I fixed in the past and all was good. Rather than be stranded we decided to replace the fuel pump as a first step. Not a lot of fun but we got it done and since I wasn't convinced that was the problem I also ran new wires to connect to the battery if needed. They were needed since the pump didn't fix the problem. The truck starts with the direct wire and toggle switch.

Question #1 - How do I determine if it's the relay? I've seen mention of jumping the diagnostic box but need more detail than I can find.

Question #2 - Is the bypassing of the relay why I have no idle?
The truck dies if I take my foot off the gas even if I'm doing 50 mph it will not start by popping the clutch, I have to use the starter.

Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like what happened to me while driving cross country. Cruising down the freeway in the middle of New Mexico and backed off the throttle and my engine started to die. Limped it into town and replaced the fuel pump, but that didn't do anything. Got it towed to a dealership and they verified it was the pump relay, replaced it, and no problems since. I'm not sure how they exactly determined it was the relay. Sorry I can't give you more helpful information.

I bypassed mine at the tank.....not under the hood

Take the hot wire at the tank and run the new wire to the desired spot on the fuse block......problem solved. I think I have been running like this for 3 years now.

Yes the fump runs all the time but the cruiser EFI system seems to keep up

give me a minute and i will look up the procedure for testing the relay

Inspection of EFI relay from the FSM

Using a ohmeter, check that there is continuity between terminals 1 and 3...ok one and 3 if you are looking at it face on is a pyramid of sorts as you know and 1 is top right and 3 is on the bottom right

then from the fsm it says check that there is NO continuity between terminals 2 and ....both on the left

if continuity is not as specified replace the relay.

test #2
inspect relay operation..... apply battery voltage across terminals 1 and 3
using a ohmmeter check that is continuity between terminals 2 and 4....all of this at the same time of course.

if operation is not as specified replace relay

see if i can find more specs

The hot wire that supply's juice to the relay as you well know is the fusible link....be sure body ground is good or it will not work.

I do not see any other specs on this other than wiring diagrams if you need to call feel free tonight anytime.

I have it hot wired from the pump to a toggle switch and it's running fine. The problem I don't understand is why it won't idle and why when it dies it won't start with a pop of the clutch. My throttle knob isn't functional but I've gotten it to work enough with a vise grip holding it open that I can drive it and not worry about the idle.

cruiser88, I understand you're running with the relay bypassed. No idle issues for you though which is what I don't understand. It's like the relay also effects something else like a fuel cutoff.

No, I didn't bring my FSM with me which will always be in the truck in the future!

TTT

Chris is in Moab and could really use some help here!!!!!

Thanks for the bump Mark! Hope all's well, it's hotter than hell here but I think I have time for a run with my truck yet today. Did some easy stuff for my friends this morning. ;)

Is your ignition spot on? Now if you look with that bundle of wires at the battery(fusible link area) you will see a yellow wire.....that is also a efi hot wire if memory serves me right ...check it.

When the baby calms down I will check my book to what you are explaining:)

Well I can tell you without knowing the code that things that can cause stalling other that filter/pump is a few you know such as fusible link,of course/relay the 15 amp efi fuse, the air flow meter(let me know if you need the specs to check this) the water temp sensor(which happened to me over the winter) air temp sensor(inside the airflow meter i believe), injection signal circuit, injector wiring(not likely) and ECU( again not likely).

I do not know if have have run a fuel pressure test yet for other possibilities?

To extract codes via box

tranny in neutral
engine hot
ignition switch on
use a jumper wire then go to TE1 and to E1 .

when looking at the box you will see 3 sections divided up.... you want the far right(as you are facing it) e1 is on the bottom left and TE1 is in the middle.
Then I assume you remember how to read the flashes...2 different sets of flashes for one code.

such as 1 flash for 1 then a pause then another flash for another 1.contentious flash means as is well.

Cruiser88, thanks for the info! I haven't done anything but drove back to denver without any problems. After I'm unpacked etc I'll look into it and see what I can figure out.

Wondering if my H55F conversion may be related or if the relay could prevent me from bump starting it.

That is very possible;)
