Fuel pump going bad? 96 Maxima

Hey everyone,
Are there any signs to a fuel pump going bad? I have noticed that on my 96 Nissan Maxima that when the you allow the gas tank to get low (about 1/4 tank or less) it takes a while to crank and start, however when the tank is full or at least at half a tank it starts perfectly. Any ideas as to whats up with it?

Zack I would say it is getting WEAK. I have killed a couple of pumps(in the tank) by letting the fuel level get to low in the past.
