Since buying my LX from a fellow mudder a few weeks ago I’ve been trying to chase down a noise and odor combo. I am getting a fuel/exhaust smell in the vehicle and ticking coming from the driver side of the engine. I was convinced it was the exhaust manifold, but my local Indy said he thinks it’s the injectors. Allegedly stethoscoped them and said 2 are failing. It could explain the fuel smell, but not the exhaust smell. Though I’d think I’d be having other issues if 2 were failing? It runs perfectly. Also, it’s pretty loud to just be injectors I would think, but before I toss $1000 at a problem, what do you think?

Mechanic’s stethoscope is cheap if you want to attempt verifying his diagnosis. I agree that wouldn’t explain the smell though. Also shouldn’t be $1000 for those.. not much disassembly to get them out and they can be cleaned and balanced for $30 each, if they detect a failing one they’d have good options.

Manifold leak? Maybe. Doesn’t happen often.. I’ll let others speak up if they’ve heard that issue on our chassis specifically and how it compares to yours.

Yeah, seems odd whatever the issue is. It’s primarily a sound/smell issue only, no noticeable drive concerns. The gas smell does have me concerned, but I’ll check the fuel rail soon. I ordered a set of injectors to at least rule that out.
