Hey guys, new here. I was hoping to get some insight into an issue I have with my 81’ fj60. I’ve invested a lot of time and money in my truck with hopes of having a reliable daily. I drive it almost every day, however I went out of town for a couple days and came back to a “NO START”, just turns over. After searching I found an animal had made a nest in the intake tube behind the headlight. Once that was clear I was still having the same problem, just turns over. I sprayed starter fluid in the carb and the truck fired right up. I swapped the fuel filter and no change. In fact the fuel filter was bone dry after trying to start the truck. I just replaced the fuel pump (mechanical) and still have zero fuel to the carb or the inline filter STILL! Fuel tank was replaced a year ago, I popped it open to check the fuel pick up and it’s a clean as it can be. I’m at a loss for what to check next. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If you replaced the fuel pump in the past with a genuine Toyota pump, then it’s fine. If you installed an aftermarket pump, replace it again with the Toyota pump.

The fuel pump is a mechanical diaphragm pump. A lobe on the camshaft pushes its lever in & out. It’s as simple as can be.
The fuel is SUCKED from the tank so make sure that the fuel line going to the tank is clear (blow low pressure air into the fuel line at the filter. You should hear it bubble.

If you crank the starter for about 6 seconds, the fuel filter should be getting fuel. If it’s still dry, either the pump isn’t sucking or the intake is clogged.

Fuel pump is Genuine Toyota. Just to double check, you're saying blow air back toward the tank or towards the carb? thanks for the info

You'll want to blow air back to the tank. I'd disconnect the fuel filter and insert pressurized air at the line there which goes back to the tank. You might need someone near the tank to listen. Conversely, if you have the means you could apply suction there as well to see if you get fuel to flow.

Cheers, James

Hey James. Thats a great suggestion on the suction. Ive got a Vacula I can hook up to it. Thanks man

did you install the spacer along with the new pump?
3 lines on pump? needs a spacer
old spacer still on block with new spacer?

is there still gas in the tank?

I hooked up my vacula and was able to suck fuel up to the inline filter, no problem. I also blew very low pressure air back to the carb through the feed line that comes off the fuel pump and felt air coming into the carb. I dont get it!

old spacer still stuck to the block? plus the new one won't work
This issue started after I parked it for a week and a bird built a nest in my intake. The birds did not install an extra spacer in that time frame. I just asked them. When I replaced the fuel pump, only 1 spacer was installed. The bolts aren't even long enough to install 2 spacers..

fuel lines hooked correctly?
