I don't know if anybody here is still using the old YT server for hosting pics and things, but I thought I'd let you all know that I had to shut down the FTP service on the server this morning, at least for the time being. I was poking around in some of the server logs, and discovered several thousand failed login attempts to the server over the last week or so, and when I traced the IPs they all came from China. It's flattering that apparently someone thinks my server is worth the time to hack into it, but I'd rather not have to fix a mess, as hosting these files on the web is only a small part of what this server does for me here.

Let me know if this is a problem. Carry on.

YT server shutdown

Is the shutdown permanent? I use it regularly (well sorta) and needed to access today. If, it's going to be shutdown permanently, I'd like to be able to purge my files and recover files I want to keep.

Thanks,

Woods

At this point I really can't predict if, or when, I'll be able to re-enable FTP access. Maintaining the web services on this server is just a side project, for a server that really is not my primary job. I do keep in touch with several techs in the IT department and they tell me they have had to shut it off campus-wide for the foreseeable future, and the attacks are still happening. I really can't risk the other critical services it provides, for a non-UNH function. I do what I can on the security side, but the folks that are doing this are probably much craftier than I am, and I don't have the resources to go to battle with them.

I'm really very sorry, and I'm open to suggestions.

Ken, I still use it to store my photos.

I was able to get on to the site to copy some picture url's around 3:00 pm today.

I did not try to log in and transfer any files though.

Please let us know if it goes away.

Thanks

It is still down:

Ya, nothing's changed. Sorry, but this is not your father's Internet anymore. We used to be able to leave the doors unlocked on our homes, and our FTP servers open, but not any longer. Like I said, hosting the photos to some YT members is like 0.0001% of the duties of this server, so I can't risk it. I could setup a separate server for doing this to reduce the risk, but we have scanners on campus now looking for this stuff and we have to justify every server that is finds.

Being in the IT industry myself it is surprising you were able to use it for this purpose for so long! Do you work with Tim Hatfield aka the Frisbee chuckin cheeba monkey?

That name is familiar, pretty sure he and I have yakked on the Saddleback repeater a few times.

Ken,
I've sent a PM asking, but am following up here. Please, please, please DELETE my entire directory on the YT server. My content is still accessible via web pages I made and I no longer what it online when I cannot control it. It's all backed up locally. PLEASE DELETE it. Thanks, Woods

No PM rec'd, but I did get your email. Folder deleted, all 1.2 GB.
