Front Driveshaft install question...

Hi all,
I'm about to re-install the front driveshaft in the FJ40...but in my haste, I didn't make marks on the flanges or shaft to show how it was bolted up originally. I never tood the driveshaft apart, just removed it as one piece and set it aside.

So, can I just bolt her up and go...or do I have to worry about it being "in phase"?

Thanks much.

Typically in phase refers to the two parts of the drive shaft. If you didn't take them apart you should be fine to bolt it up and go.

Thanks Alstaz....

What alstaz said. But to see what in phase means, pick an end on the ds, look at the orientation of the flange and then look at the flange at the other end of the ds. They should be exactly aligned. If not, the fix is to pull the end that covers the splines (the short piece) and remove and replace to align. Simple as that.

On my old minitruck, it vibrated when I lifted it. It turned out that the rear ds was out of phase *from the factory* and phasing it fixed the vibration.

Thanks Dan...I get it now.

The FSM says to make marks on the flange when ever you remove the driveshaft. I guess that is a pre-emptive strike just in case the ds gets separated when it is off the truck....and probably easier than eyeballing it.

Yes, the FSM presumes that the ds' are already in phase, and if it isn't separated, allows a quick visual for reinstall.
