Front differential - what makes it different from other 8"

Apologies in advance for an ignorant question:
I hoping for some difinitive clarity on what makes the 100-series front diff apparently unique from most of the other Toyota 8" stuff. Specifically, what are the differences that prevent the use of other 8" carriers in the 100-series?
