Front Diff

Hi All,

While adjusting the wheel bearing on the long side of my front axle, I noticed that with the wheel locked, I was not turning the drive shaft. The short side wheel was on the ground. Hmmm, I thought. Finished up, thd tried to move the axle by turning the drive shaft.... not move.

Lowered the long side, raised the short side, locked the hub, spun the wheel, and the drive shaft turned.

I am sure I have not done anything to the axle... Whats going on here? It this just the nature of an open diff? Do I need to pull the long side shaft and check it?

pull off the locking hub and check that you have it properly installed. you might have turned the locking mechanism while it was out and now it won't lock...

Naw... thats not it. I had the hub off, and was watching the axle as the drive shaft was turned... and it wasn't moving.

Oh, and there are no unusual noises... even in 4wd.

Assuming an open front diff, the first time when you locked the hub on the long side and turned it, was the short side hub locked? If not, the inner axle, birf, etc may be turning the opposite direction inside. That is the normal open diff action. Try locking both hubs, then the driveshaft should turn.

If the front is locked, you shouldn't be able to turn anything with one wheel on the ground.
