front axle c-clips

wanted to replace the c-clips while i had the hubs apart putting on new rotors. the parts guys
says i have to know the thickness of the c-clip because there are multiple clips for the '04 front
axle. whats up with that?

You should call a toyota dealer, they can tell you

True.

Thicknesses range from 1.8 - 2.8mm in thickness increasing in .2mm increments.

Just reuse the ones you have.

Yep. I think the FSM tells you to replace them, but I've reused them a couple of times when swapping out CV assemblies.

i was just trying to understand the logic for having different

To a degree, the c-clips are used as shims to reduce the amount of slop. Normally, you can flip them for re-use.

I've only had/used 2.2 mm on my two LC100s. I see now that I could probably fit a 2.4 ring on the RHS, so I suppose I should....

that was the only thing that i could think of but the c-clip and the
groove in the axle were both 1.8 mm so to use a thicker c-clip i would have to change the axle....

Holy Thread Resurrection Batman!

I’ve going to replace both front axles soon and I’m guessing I should just go ahead and order two or three of each size because the axles will be new, the flanges will also be new.

Would be great to have spares in my kit as I usually save all metric stuff as you never know right.

Am I correct on this?

Oh and I’ll be doing my diff axle seals while in there so those are on the list also.

If you're talking about the snap rings, the link about should have you covered. It has different thicknesses to account for any slop or gap you might have. I got these when I did my front brakes/bearings/diff seals. Ended up being the same thickness as my old ones but at least they're fresh. Good luck!

That kit in Post #11 is what you should buy. Or, you can buy all, or the mid-range ones, at your Toyota/Lexus dealer. They are labeled A-G. Not sure what numeric vaule of thickness correlates with each one. @2001LC has a great thread somewhere, where he goes in to detail regarding gaps, measurements, use of feeler guages, etc. when placing a c-clip or whatever we call them. Re-use of them isn't recommended and factory calls for them to be replaced at each removal.

If the c clip fits and seats is it good to go? Is there such thing as too tight when selecting a size? I used the CO kit on my 80 axle with manual hubs.
