Can you remove a factory e-locker and still use the same gears and diff housing with another locker? I currently have a front factory e-locker and I want to remove it and put a Spartan locker in the front (this is a trail only truck). Is it possible to do this?

Nick

Dont think so
The elocker axle housing is different than open diff housing

You mean pull the locker out of the current diff and put something else in?

I guess it depends on the carrier

Never heard of someone wanting to go the other direction

Let me look at the FSM and see what the difference is in the two diffs and carriers

Yea, I want take the e-locker out and use the same gears and housing with a different locker in it. The only reason I want to do this is because I already modified my axle housing for the e-locker third and it seems like it would be easier to just use all the parts I already have on hand and just have to buy the new locker.

I think that if you got a carrier from an open diff and swapped it over it would work

But there might be more to it than that

What about the locker actuator and stuff?

Obviously you would need to set up the gears again

I have converted the e-locker to a cable, because my actuator was toast when I bought it, so there is no actuator. I was thinking if I welded a plate over where the actuator goes then that would seal up the hole there.

Are you talking about welding on the actual diff housing and seal up that hole?

I cant really picture it.

You will still need to swap over the open carrier into the locker diff housing and set up the gears.

The easiest way is to swap your third with one from another rig with open difs - they might even pay you to do it. This does get a touch more complicated if your gears dont match theirs but it should be a straight swap.

If you take a look at the FSM you can see the actual differences between the two. You should be able to remove the unnecessary parts and put in what you like as long as you can seal the housing it shouldnt be an issue as the assembly does care if those pieces are in there.

I know I can just swap thirds with someone that has an open one and that might be what I do if this route doesnt work out. I was just curious if it was possible to take the e-locker out and still use the gears and housing with a Spartan locker.

Correct me if I am wrong, but an open front third and an e-locked front third have the same gears and all, except the e-locked one has the locker inside. The only reason the e-locked diff housing is shaped different is so it can hold all the parts to the locker. So that leads me to believe that if you take the locker out, you could put a different locker in its place, you would just have a lot of extra space.

That is correct
The elocker assembly would need to be removed from the diff and get an open diff case and remove the spider gears, install the spartan in the open case, swap your ring gear over and install the assembly into the locking diff housing and set up the gears again.
All you need to do is make sure all the other holes on the locker diff are sealed
The ring gear will need to be removed regardless on the open case to get the spartan locker into it
I know this because I just installed a lockright in my open front diff.

If you are running something different than 4:10's then you would need to swap over your pinion gear as well and set it all up.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I do believe that all the internal parts are the same except for the locker assembly

Sorry I calling the case the carrier wrong term according to the FSM

I think the e locker 3rd and open 3rd use different carrier bearings and are just completely different in that area even though the gears are the same, so if the Spartan locker is designed for an open 3rd it isn't likely to fit an e-locker 3rd.

Every part listed in the catalog (case, R&P, etc) all are listed with or without diff lock. They are different part numbers as well so I'm going to say they are probably different.

wildsmith is correct about the gearing though. With or without diff lock is still listed as 4:10.

Thanks Sam! I guess I should have just gone straight to you, you do have the power of quickly looking up part numbers. At least there is now a thread about this topic...

I guess I will move on to using an open third and trying to sell the e-locker...Anyone interested in an e-locker minus the acuator? Ill make you a good deal...

To bad this did not come up before I redid my entire front end
Or else I would trade you my open diff with the lock right in it.:bang:

That would have worked out too well...

I might bite on that. Whole front axle swap? Just what are we talking about doing here? Was your truck locked to begin with, or did you modify the front axle to get the front in? I can't remember what modifying has to happen on a front open diff axle to make the locked third fit... I know what has to happen on the rear.

Got a rear you're interested in getting rid of also?
