So I went to look at an 80 for my wife. Real nice rig, i'll be getting it for her on monday. When we test drove it I looked in the glove box to find a notarized title. I looked at her with a grin and told her to go to dmv, and got hit....What, i was just kidding, maybe slightly tempted.

My bad citizen side would say it is mine and not tell her and be done with it. But I would just end up slapped by the :princess: if I told her the truth so just spend the $5000 especially if it is a 95-97!

Karma gentlemen, Karma...

I put a deposit on it, and will pony up the rest mid week. It is a 92(easier for me as far as the 3fe) and is in immaculate condition. You could eat off every inch of under the hood and the under carriage, with very minor grime on the t-case, does not look as if it was cleaned, look original. All the parts and surfaces under the hood look new and shiny. And the interior looks new with a minor dash crack. He is the second owner and bought the truck off his uncle. They both were maintenance junkies, and stayed on top of the work. Has e lockers and 185k. It is so clean it is hard to believe it has so many miles. What should I look for, as i am not familiar with the fj80. I am willing to give up my deposit if there is something wrong with this rig, or if i find a better deal, as that is the reason i put the deposit on it, give me time to consider it.

I thought you couldn't get lockers until 93 - only the center came standard? I also thought I had this figured out...

what do you mean by center? And what would be the difference. There was a diff lock button on the dash, and it sure acted like lockers in that fry's parking lot when I turned around

Center Diff Lock (CDL)
"The FJ80 Land Cruiser is a full-time four wheel drive (4WD) system that is equipped with a mechanical lock type center differential system. With the CDL unlocked (normal driving), the open center differential (transfer case) allows the driveshafts to turn at different speeds so when you are turning on a hard surface there is no binding. When you engage (lock) your CDL, it splits the power 50/50 to the front and rear driveshafts regardless of the surface you’re driving on or if you are turning."

Was it this kind of switch?

Or This 1993 or later:

"1993 - An advanced 24-valve, 4.5-litre six-cylinder petrol engine, 1FZ-FE was introduced. Larger brakes were added and the total wheelbase was made slightly longer.Front and rear axle lockers (code k294) appeared as an option."

By "center" we mean locking the transfer case, which forces both driveshafts to turn @ the same speed. This does not equate to locking differentials, which cause both tires (right & left) to turn @ the same speed.

If you lock the transfer case (button or low range) and try to turn around on pavement the driveline will bind and cause tire slippage. You will experience this behavior with or without locking differentials...

well that is disappointing, I was excited about lockers:censor:

There is always THIS. if it a super clean 92' and you want to be frugal...installed in a couple hours.

Man
I am glad that you didn't take the original joke further. Karma is pretty close to the truth. Most of us on this board think more of you, as does your wife. Integrity is valuable.
I have a fully factory lockable '96 80. I have used my rear locker once in 4 years. The value of lockers depends entirely on where you live and drive. I would not give up mine. I will not part with my lockers, just because I have them.
But a locker is a two-edged sword. On ice, it will work against you. In sand, it will cause you to dig deeper holes.
On real rock, such as granite, there is a real advantage to locking all wheels together. In canyons, you often have two or more wheels off of the ground. Then a locker is not only useful, but needed.
Then it is worth having.
If you have found a truck without a locker, buy it if the price is right. If you can get the lockers, hold a BBQ and pool party to celebrate! You have scored! Fewer than 30,000 locked 80's were imported into the US. If you have one, give yourself a high-five!! You win!!
