I bought my FJ through them and so far have had nothing but great things to say about them. Now that they are a sponsor, I'm wondering how "mod friendly" they will be when it comes to warranty work should I decide to modify my FJ. I am looking at a OME lift and ARB front bumper. Anyone ever talked to them about this?

I wouldn't count on them being so. When the tech saw my FJC, he about peed himself and didn't want to touch it because of the Budbuilt skids.

What I would recommend is to take the time to talk to Chris in parts. He will point you toward the tech who might be more friendly in that respect. But, bottom line decisions are made by the service manager and they don't have a very good rep for being mod friendly...

those items you mentioned as well as most other after market items will not impact your factory warranty.

Law:The warranty is NOT void by the mere installation of aftermarket products. If the dealer insists on warranty denial, call the Federal Trade Commission at (202) 326-3128.

In addition, SEMA monitors problems associated with warranty claims to ensure that vehicle dealers are not misrepresenting the law. Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) (714) 396-0289.

The real protection for consumers is the Magnusen-Moss act which puts the onus on the dealership/manufacturer to "prove" that the aftermarket part "caused" the defect.

I'm not suggesting that Fred Anderson is one who may deny warranty claims due to aftermarket components. My experiences with them have been positive though I've not had to request a warranty repair from them.

I do know that a dealer can deny a claim which is then logged into the "network" using the VIN and other dealerships will follow suit despite being valid or not. Appealing beyond the dealership service manager goes to the "regional rep" and then to the appeal process as identified in the owner's manual. The biggest problem is that while all this is going on, the vehicle is sitting dead with no work being performed on it until the process is complete.

The sad thing is when one dealer denies then another fixes under warranty and it becomes the luck of the draw instead of a valid warranty issue. So much of this has to do with the customer's attitude when going on for the request for repair/warranty. It shouldn't but does. Many of the FJC owners have had a number of issues such that even with a TSB issued by Toyota, a dealer will deny fixing it until the owner brings in the TSB which should be in their dealer network database.

Its important to know your rights and equally important to establish a positive relationship with the dealer service personnel. Thats why I suggested talking with Chris so he can help with the technicians and service writers that may be more flexible/tolerant of those of us who like to "enhance" our vehicles beyond Toyota's vision...

well said.

Everytime i have service done at fred anderson i always request (Billy) Haigh. He has always been very helpful, very detailed and one of a few honest mechanic i actually trust.

It's worth asking. If you have a friendly relationship with the people that work there they may be willing to help you out. I know Cox Toyota put an OME on one of my Dad's trucks.

Cox has been good to me in some instances (gave us a stellar deal of the wife's 09 Camry) and not so in others. Be sure to get an estimate in writing on service work and good luck getting a service advisor that knows jack about a LC. One guy told me that Toyota didn't recommend a transmission or brake flush for my 97 so he didn't know if I needed one with 110k on the clock :meh:. They also wanted to charge me close to $1k for replacing the spark plug tube seals...obviously I didn't have them do the work.

I do have a good relationship with the parts department manager though...real nice guy.

Keep in mind that my experience might not be the norm.

FA has been great on mods and fixing items. They replaced the front diff after it broke at the carrier while 4wheeling on my modded 99 100 series with a lift, bigger tires, arb bumper and still covered in mud. Said it was covered under the powertrain warranty.

Replaced 4 cv boots on lifted 100 after they started leaking. This one was a little tougher, SE Toyota said not covered under 100k warranty however the Toyota USA site said cv's boots were covered. I printed out the site page and had Toyota USA call them and then they replaced them.
