my 60 did this to me in death valley a couple of months ago. even though the stick was in 4L and the light was on, it was only in 2L.
shifting back to 2H, then to 4L again engaged the driveshaft.
don't know why this happened, but have had this happen before on other vehicles. there's enough other stuff to deal with on my 60 that whether it catches four wheel drive on the first attempt or not isn't high on the list.
the transfercase was supposedly rebuilt by the PO. Have the receipt, but that doesn't mean they did good work...
