Sorry to revive an old thread, but theres some erroneous info here that might be important to someone searching in the future.
400's are a 4" bore (same as 302 & all 351's) with a 4" stroke. Can you say TORQUE?
Think "Factory Stroker 351".
The 460 doesn't have that much stroke, and suffers from poor efficiency due to it's larger bore size. The 300 I6 has the same cylinder dimensions, but two fewer cylinders and a much poorer breathing cylinder head. I do not know of any other modern Ford engine that came with this long of a stroke.
What killed the 400 was timing, both literally and figuratively. It came out in the worst of the smog era. As such it had incredibly poor cam timing and was seriously detuned. Built right they pull like Jack, the Bear and can be reasonably efficient.
Edelbrock does offer an intake for this engine.
Anyone considering this engine should go past the net legend and really look into it.
Uh, negative. Not much more.I had a 400...... I can only imagine what I could have done with a better carb, intake and exhaust.
