there is a rebuilt 1978 ford 400 for sell here and was wondering if anyone has done any ford engine swapsin a 60or 62?
my engine is acting up and if I have to rebuild the 3FE I'm going bigger.

I like Fords but wouldn't use the 400. Even Ford guys have no love for them.

the 400 was an orphan child, hard to find bits for and not popular for conversion plates like bellhousings and clutch/flywheel setups. stay with a 302 and stroke it to 347 or go a 351 block and stroke to 415.

I have a 302 in my 60.

A 351 would be nice as well..

Unless you are springover, the engine swap is kind of a PITA (exhaust and starter get in the way)

I hate a 400 Ford motor.....but 302 is plenty.

Mace did you HAVE to bolt up the C6 because the stock was not good enough or did you just want to?

Some things he must consider:D

I had the C6, so I used it. I wanted my wife to feel more comfotrable driving the 60, so an auto was a good thing.

I believe that Marks makes adapters from the ford motor to the stock Tranny.

If you do a 351, do a Windsor they are more torquey than the Cleavlands. I do love the sound of a 351C.

Yeah that's what I'm using..................................

I'n not SOA and wasn't planning on it.........................do I really hafta?

do I?

do I?

Oh yeah.................351W EFI Cali smog legal for me.............

I thought the 351c had more torque. Could be wrong. Windsor is smaller and lighter though.

hey thanks guys I'll keep an eye out for a 351 Windsor then. I'm not SOA yet and not sure if I want to be either. I have a 2.5" OME lift and if I SOA that I'd be too tall for my likings.

next Question? what do you all think would be more cost effective swaping to a 351 or just keeping my turd f an engine and rebuild it?

The 400 was a stepchild. The 302/351 windsor is a better choice. Plenty of aftermarket support and EFI or carb options aplenty.

A plug for the "Stepchild"

I had a 1971 Mercury Monterey with the 400 and a C6. It had a two barrell carb and would fry the tires at every light. The little beast made 400 pounds of torque at 2200 RPM (peak) and the sensation of being pushed into the back seat just never went away. I loved that car and I've always had a soft spot for the 400 ever since. I can only imagine what I could have done with a better carb, intake and exhaust.

Not much more.

351C was a higher rev motor than the 351W motor is.
Aftermarket for the Windsor is a hell of a lot better than the C. 302 stuff and 351W stuff is almost identical (the block of the 351 is a bit taller than a 302).

without a springover you run some seriosuly tight tolerances between the starter/exhaust and the front driveshaft. I am curing my issues with a 2 piece front driveshaft.

Advance adapters carries the Mark's adapters (austraulia)

uhhhh...

i dunno, im not a fan of most v style engines. i like inlines. so if you want ford, go for the 300 strait 6. its a real strong farm style engine, it'll never die on you:cheers:

And has all of the PITA of adapting a Ford motor into a LC and a serious lack in the HP dept compared to the V 8's...

300 is a good motor. But not enough of an improvment over the LC six IMHO.

I would think most cost effective would be finding a good used 3FE to swap in. Might not be so easy based on your location though. MarkW would be a good one to talk to, but he hasn't been on much in the last several months.

true, but i personally am not lookin for man-sized amountes of HP, i like high torque and longevity, which the 300 provides.
