You can join www.maine4x4.org and www.maineoffroading.org. Both are still in the development stages and are taking ideas on how to grow and improve. Want to know of some trails in Maine? Want some buddies to wheel with? Come join! My name is TODEOTA.

I'm in Maine. Tried to check out both sites. One requires registration and soon will require paid membership. I didn't register.

The other is simply a single page with a few photos and nothing else. It says there's a forum but I don't see one. I only see a link to the designer's website in the footer of the page.

maineoffroading.org looks like it might have some potential, but just like Rufus, I couldn't find the forum(s). Is there any way to replace one of the three Jeep photos with one of a Toyota? (just joking)

I'll plan to check back in a month or so.

**EDIT for more accurate info: ***The forum will be free, but to take part in members events and such, you have to be a paying member. If it's not for you, then you don't have to pay, and you can still use most of the forum. Go ahead and sign up, and if you have some stuff to share, please do!

These are not my sites. They are just local forums I frequent. 4x4 is a resurrected site name and it is in its newfound infant stage, and offroading is in the same boat but it's a whole new site. Worth a poke around until January or longer if you become a permanent member.

they might want to do what mud does get some advertisers and if you don't want to see them you pay if its just strictly a pay sight its going to be a very desolate site

It's extremely hard to build traffic to a forum that requires someone to signup before they can view the content. It's ludicrous to think that someone is going to pay for something before they can even see it especially since there are so many other outlets on the web that provide similar content for free.

I've been running a forum for almost 10 years as my primary source of income. In comparison my site gets about 6 times the traffic that Mud sees, granted it's a completely different industry. We've never had to advertise and have built our traffic and business by being experts at Search Engine Marketing in a very competitive area. Basically, I know a few things about running a successful forum which is one of the reasons why I thoroughly enjoy participating here. Mud is one of the best I've found.

These are interesting bits of info.

Hey there guys. My name is Jason and I own and run Maine4x4 with the help of my staff. I appreciate all of your opinions and just wanted to state my own reasons.

Your account has to be approved because there's a huge amount of spam and bots daily and I'm sick of having to watch the forum every minute for spam. If you are really interested in the club and helping us, registering and waiting for approval (which usually is within a few hours) shouldn't be an issue.

Secondly, as far as "dues" go, you will still be able to access all areas of the site, except a "Dues paying events and trail rides" section. You will still be able to log onto the site and check all of the content. I'm not about to cut off all of our members that can't or don't want to pay. That's not what we are about. The forum is our main line for new members and communicating with them.

Again, I appreciate your opinions and suggestions. Thanks for reading my blab. :)

hmmm thanks for that - its great to see outsider thoughts. I wonder if Rufusthedufus was usiing Firefox or something to look at the page, since I have see many issues with our site and FF.

Any chance you could ask him?

I am sure that is the problem he has having because I experienced the same issue with FireFox. The "Enter" link was on a totally other page all the way to the right of the screen via the scroll bar. Once I got into the forum, then it was fine...using FireFox now without trouble...

Just my .02

Try it again without using Firefox. Maybe it will work?
