SOLD!!! 1993 4Runner Turbo Diesel 3.0 Liter One Owner

SOLD SOLD SOLD :) I will pull all of this down as soon as I figure out how to. Thanks for looking, but most importantly, thanks to a good customer who came through. Outstanding.

1993 4Runner 4 x 4 for sale by original owner. $11,000 OBO. Several years ago, I had a complete diesel swap done by TVR Automotive in Tuscaloosa. The person who did it is a former Toyota Tech and the job he did is awesome. It looks factory stock with factory alloy wheels. Externally, the vehicle has a TJM T 15 bumper/bull bar which is very nice. Class III receiver in the back. Bilsteins all around and upgraded springs in the back to eliminate the factory sag they all came with. The motor is a 3.0 liter 4 cylinder. Model code y-kzn130w-gkpqt. Automatic transmission with tow mode and 4 x 4. Vehicle is left hand drive, which is quite nice. Interior is stock including factory AM/FM Cassette except for a four point racing harness and removable headrest I installed for the rear seat middle passenger (for safety). That upgrade is easily removed as I saved the original belts. New BFG 31" All Terrain tires. The motor is a turbo with a KN airfilter and a factory stainless exhaust, installed when the diesel was fitted. Currently making it spiffy to sell as we have purchased another brand new 4Runner and are looking to buy one more after we sell the '93. This has been a wonderful truck and I'm totally sold on Toyota quality. The vehicle is quiet, on par with a nice TDI or Mercedes and doesn't clatter and thunk like Dodge, Chevy or Ford diesels. Limited slip rear end. Hardly ever was off road and pretty much the worse it has seen is a muddy dirt road. This is my daily driver. If you have ever been interested in one, I think you would freak if you drove it. If you are into 4 wheeling, a diesel is great for low rpm climbing.

I'm having problems attaching photos so hopefully I will get that problem resolved. Stand by.

Thanks.

My miles per gallon

It varies but the last time I checked, it was around 25 mpg. It will vary like all vehicles but out on the open road, not flooring it, it will hit around 25 mpg. In the city, it will drop to more like 20 in stop and go, high traffic light density driving. My city is cursed with mistimed lights so they all seem red. Does this help?

Miles and timing belt service due date

Here goes: As of today, there are now 156,979 miles on the diesel motor, transmission and the associated computers and equipment that came with the 1995 Hi Lux Surf half cut. The A/C unit is part of that package and blows cold.

A new timing belt was put on the engine during the installation in 2006. The engine had 108,531 miles on it when I got it and I've put 48,448 miles on it since late 2006. That works out to about 8,000 miles a year on the diesel. A new belt is due after 100,000 km of driving or 60,000 miles. I have a new one and will install it before it is sold, even though it is not due.

The vehicle went ~186,000 miles with the V6 motor and manual transmission before the still perfectly running, non-oil burning motor and transmission were yanked in 2006 for the swap and sold. Add the 186,000 gas powered miles to the 48,448 diesel powered miles and you've got 234,448 miles on the truck. On a 19 year old truck, that works out to about 12,300 miles a year. All I know is these things run and run and the diesels are even more long-lived. If you want a good laugh, you can look up old used Mercedes diesels and they'll be for sale with 300,000 or 400,000 miles. Sounds like you already have a diesel so you know the story on them. Besides a battery and a windshield, the only thing we needed to replace when it was gas powered was the clutch on the manual transmission around 100,000 miles if I recall correctly.

Hope this helps.

Clean looking! Interested... where's it located and where is the best place to see more pictures? I can send you email if that works best.

TIA

Holy Cow You Are Far Away

Mike, you and I are only about as far apart on the map of the United States as we can get. Vehicle is located in North Florida. If you are still interested, let me know. Maybe a good excuse to go on a vacation to the Florida beach?

The car has been babied for its age. It gets garaged every night and has never towed anything. The Class III receiver is for my deer/hog carrying rack.

what engine/tranny/tcase? It sounds like the engine/tranny were swapped, but the tcase is the gasser?

Yup. Not as close as I hoped. Do you have more pictures?

Mike, send a PM with your email

Mike,

Go ahead and send a PM with your email. You had a good idea to do that originally.

Thanks

I've noticed quite a few Cummins engine swap vehicles for sale. I had also looked into those but chose the factory Toyota diesel. I will not bad mouth the Cummins engine or the converted Land Cruisers, because I think it is and remains a viable alternative. It all comes down to if you want smooth and quiet (but Japanese) or the classic diesel clatter and vibration. I still think American diesels sound great, especially under acceleration, but living with that sound is another thing I've given up. Used to have another truck ('82 Bronco, 6 point roll cage, 32" tires, MSD, Ford Motorsports GT-40 off road only motor, high flow exhaust) and it sounded like a race motor. Well, that's because it was. Anyhow, 5 years of that beast roaring up and down the highway with me in it got old, as fun as it was to pull up next to convertables and blast them with sound waves. I guess we all grow up some time.

"Vehicle is located in North Florida" .....There is a lot of land mass in North Florida....can you narrow it down a bit?:)

Model code y-kzn130w-gkpqt. ......In laymen terms is that another name for a 1KZ diesel?

It looks like the 1KZ-TE, which is 3.0L. The description says it is a 2.8L engine. What transmission and transfer case were used with the conversion?

Thanks for the pictures you sent me... this is a really clean looking Runner!

Answers to questions

First of all, I am pleased to report that another gentleman and I have discussed the selling of the vehicle and I've accepted his offer. I still don't mind answering any questions about the vehicle as it is pretty unusual. When the actual sale takes place I will let you know. I do appreciate the fact that this site is populated by real enthusiasts who understand what they are looking at and talking about.

OK, the 1995 Hi Lux Surf automatic transmission, transfer case and everything was used in the swap. Those are the same ones you and I can get in the states, so there is little to no difference. The motor is indeed what is referred to as the 3.0 liter diesel but the displacement is actually around 2.9. Yes, I am a goof and wrote 2.8 so I am sorry about that. It is a turbo diesel and it is the most desirable engine. I live in Tallahassee so that narrows down the terrain for you.

It is darn clean for its age and original. The years have scratched some of the plastic and rude people have tapped the sides with their doors but these Toyotas are just tanks.

Up for sale

Told you I'd let interested people know when and if it sold. It did not sell. No hard feelings and that's the way it goes. I can send high resolution photos if you need more and are serious. If you are very serious, send a PM with your telephone.
