looking at replacing our furnace. looking at 92% or 95% efficient.

currently we have a 1977 or 78, 175,000BTU natural gas, forced air, down flow/reverse flow.

makes? what to look for?

Make certain to get a heat loss/heat gain calculation for the space from a competent contractor. I'd have to guess that 175K input is massively oversized and that Manual J would tell you that a much smaller furnace would meet your needs.

As far as brands, I'm a huge fan of the American Standard [Trane] products. We get excellent distributor support and the technical training is better than anyone elses in the industry (that I've experienced).

Counter flow, 95% AFUE, the largest commonly available is 120K or 125K. Keep in mind that 65% of 175K is 113,750 BTU/hr and 95% of 120 is 114,000 BTU/hr. A 20 year old furnace might actually have an AFUE rating of 65%.
