I can't give you too much advice about LA (lower Alabama) - but prepare to make an allegiance to the Tide or Tigers...it's more fun when you have something you can argue with the whole state (or at least half). And definitely invest in some Mossy Oak gear asap - ha!
Ft Rucker is a lot like Bragg...out in the middle of no where, a few small cities/towns around, but even further away from a major city...but at least you be close to the beach!
Destin is my favorite beach in the panhandle - it's a lot different than anything around here, much more commercialized, but also super beautiful. The sand is like powdered sugar.
I'll have to get your contact info - my folks live near Auburn - not exactly close, but if the schedule works out you and Deidre can get in some wakeboarding.
Good luck to you...better start liking fried okra, greens, and lots of BBQ...my favorite is Full Moon BBQ in Bham. (If you ever make your way up to Bham give me shout...I can let you know all the great watering holes).
