Hi everyone!

I am going to do a full base line on all fluids of my girlfriends '02 4runner.

After seeing the capacites in the owners manual, some of the amounts look small to me. My Land Cruiser was the same way. Example: It says the tranny fluid is 2 qts. when it is actually 4 qts.

So, is there a list of correct capacities that I can use for reference?

Thanks, Dace

Really hard to imagine that the owners manual is off by a factor of 100%. I would agree that the most variability tends to be in the automatic tranny fluid, but I'd still trust the owners manual to figure out how much stuff to buy within a quart. If you are concerned about not having enough, then just round up all your estimates and return the extra fluid.

I know what you mean. however, my FZJ-80 manual was just that. I am going to order from AMSoil direct cause it's way cheaper than getting it locally.

The rest should be the correct amounts, the auto trans. "drain and fill" amount is the only one I've found to be off.
Mine was also more like 4 to 4-1/2 quarts.

And if you are doing a complete trans fluid swap it will take ~15 qts.

Finally doing the tranny fluid & filter on my wife's 4-runner, which feels like it slips especially when powertrain is cold. It has ~115K miles on it, we bought it with 89K so I do not know what the previous history is...

Any particular brand of tranny fluid that you guys recommend? Would it be a waste of money to get synthetic, especially if the tranny symptoms don't improve?

Well for me I would stick with the local Toyota Dealers fluid.
For my 96 2.7L auto tranny the local dealer uses an Esso DexronIII.

I have used this other garage for years and a while ago I took my 96 in to get the fluids changed.
Having the tranny flushed began a series of events worth a small novel. What ever brand or additive my good old garage used showed up as a binding gas pedal when I pressed down on it as the spool valve in the transmission throttle body would bind.
Long story short I ended up getting the local Minute Lube to do a flush as they also use an Esso DexronIII like the dealer. Has been fine ever since.
The local dealer prefers not to do flushes but just drain the pan and replace which continually blends the old fluid with new. No filter in my 96 just a screen.
At any rate X2 from what Ray said in the other thread about your transmission fluid is not the place to try to save money.
I started going the synthetic route with my above problems without success as well. For me now..I use the dealers OEM fluid in the transmission...they are way way too much$ to fix/replace.
I'm concerned that yours is slipping... the pan only holds maybe 1/4 or 1/5 of what is in the entire system..cooler, converter etc.

Yes get the fluid all changed... if you let it keep slipping you will rub the friction material off the plates then she is done.
