I don't know about you but I hate floppy HVAC registers in old cars. I've found that the side registers were available but not the center one. I did have one whose vanes were ok but up and down they flopped all over the place.
The culprit was these little black bearing points:
They were rubber at one point, but 25 years in the Middle East heat turned them into useless and brittle and incapable of arresting the register.
My solution was to start with common rubber grommets and carve them into something with approximately the same function.
