I just posted this in the electronic toys section but since it is in my FJC I figured I would offer a heads up over here.

So my laptop mount is in...
I have to say that this mount from Jeniko.com is the best thing going for $50 and worth twice that easily. I looked at the Ram mounts...the part that holds the laptop was too thick. Nothing else out there really grabed me until I saw Jeniko's website. They do have a "no drill" mount but I wasn't sure about clearance in front of the seat bolts and if you have looked at any pics or seen my FJC in person you know I am not afraid to drill a hole somewhere.

The mount went in super easy and as you will see in my pics the only mod's I did were to shorten the swing arm since it looked like it might hit the dash and to angle the underside of the swingarm for the sake of the passengers leg...I will more than likely email a pic to Jeniko since I think that angle would be something that would help anyone.

Figure 2 hours for install only if you mod it like I did, otherwise less than 1 hr.

I did a desert night run and really pounded on some washes and whoops and the mount held my very heavy Toughbook without any trouble. Yeah it wiggles a touch but nothing serious. If you were really concerned Jeniko has a leg brace that goes to a seat bolt that would help.

Check out the pics and feel free to ask any questions you have.

looks good.. i was thinking abt a laptop mount.. but i m not sure abt the drilling..

Have you had the rig in rough terrain with the computer installed yet? That looks like a lot of leverage on the floor mount to stand up to any significant G loading in any direction other than the vertical. Aside from truly rough stuff, you may see shifting/flexing and subsequent fatigue of the sheet metal at the mounting point even in heavy washboard. Should work just fine on the roads though.

You might want to consider adding a brace to the dash area to triangulate it. That would limit the potential of flexing and fatiguing. AT least in a fore and aft direction. It could still move side to side though. If you triangulated the brace itself in a horizontal plane that would virtually eliminate any movement of the vertical shaft that mounts to the floor and then it should be ready for rough terrain with no concerns.

Mark...

I take it that you turn off the airbag when the laptop mount is on?

I would second Mark's advice - no laptop is light when traveling on washboard trails....

well I have been running it on a few trails now and it is rock solid
I agree that the seatbolt mount unit for $129 might be better and I hope someone gives it a try and reports back
I can add a piece they sell that goes from the vert support to the far seat bolt...thinking about it...we will see.
The laptop is held in place with industrial velcro...I it is on very very well.
As to the airbag...I figure the deployment since it comes up and over the dash will close/move the top of the laptop out of the way....no solution is perfect and if anyone has ideas I welcome them

For the price this is a great mount, and like I said I think folks would be very happy with the seat bolt mount for $129.

I will continue to report on things like metal warp/fatigue and such over time

Unfortunately the FJ has a weight sensitive airbag switch built into the passenger seat, no way to manually turn it off other than pulling the plug on it. If there's nobody or a very light load on the front seat (less than 35lbs) the airbag wont deploy, any more weight and the passenger gets a face full of toughbook at high velocity. I have a different sytle mount working now that centers the laptop over the center console & is quickly removable if needed with no visible holes when its not there.

oooooo that sounds cool
pics pics pics
I like to see various ways to make things happen

I am ok with the airbag issue since there is no way to turn it off...although I might double check with toyota to be sure...maybe a switch option thing
also even with the laptop open the highest pt is just an inch or 2 higher than the topof the dash
