I'm testing the waters here. I'm looking to buy either a 95-97 or a 00-02 LC/LX. I know that on the 80's, I'll have to do a fair amount of work to make it my daily driver as far as getting all the PM done. I'd prefer an 80 over a 100, but the 100 will likely require less work (everywhere I look around here there seems to be a soccer mom in a 100). I don't mind doing the work, but I'm afraid my wife will shoot me if I bring home another "project". Come on, who doesn't like a half disassembled boat motor in the driveway.

Anyway, I figure this is the best place to start. (been lurking for several months) Anyone in the area who I can turn to as a mechanic for the basics like birfs, etc? Thanks.

PS - there is a pretty rough white 93 with 112K (i think) near me if anyone is interested. I drove it and he was asking 5500. He seemed real motivated and would probably take alot less. Too much work for me to make it a daily driver.

95-97 may not require all that much work if you take your time looking for one. Everyone seems to want to find a low mileage truck, but with these that doesn't matter as much as the maintenance history. Are you in Birmingham? You should come to next months meeting to get an idea of what it actually takes to own one. We have a good range of trucks in the group, mostly 80's for now, but you should be able to get a good idea of what maintenance is really required.

First off, welcome!
Second off, if that junk has 112K then it better not be a rough truck, I'd kill to have that few miles on my junk! If you pass on the truck, please let me know where it is...

The easiest is to lern how to service your front axle yourself. It really is not hard, honestly.
Secondly, if you chose not to, go to James, here on the board. His mechanic guy has learned alot and knows his stuff about our trucks from what i hear

Matt and Eric ( the two previous posts) are two of the most knowledgeable and best cruiser guys in the state and probably the Southeast...if not the World. And they like my beer.

I have a 96 LX450 with 178000 miles and it has required only regular maintenance you can do. Besides that, the other services your truck will probably require can also be done by you with the knowledgeable help of the local guys and the internet mudders. If it comes down to something bigger, you can have a HAM (Helping A Member) meeting at your place and we can all come over, eat your food, drink your beer, and work on your truck.

There are some decent shops in town if you need some work, but part of the fun of a cruiser is learning about the truck and working on it.

By the way...welcome.

thanks for the replies. the 80 i mentioned above is located at the corner of mill springs and cold harbor drive off old leads road in mountain brook. i'll try to swing by and get the number off the sign.

i agree that doing the work myself is the best way. i'm just worried about time constraints. between working on boats and jet skis i've usurped most of my spare time. if i find one that will let me hold off the big stuff till after summer, that may work to let me do it.

What are they asking?

I've been in that truck and the inside is pretty rough. I think the wife told me it had been through a couple high school kids. I don't think it had lockers and I don't know the mechanical status.

number in window is 873-1282. the owner said that his wife drove it for a while and then the kids drove it to high school. not sure about college. i don't think it had lockers. inside was rough, leather badly cracked front and rear, paint oxidized. damage to front and rear bumper and spoiler had been crushed in. motor for passenger seat didn't work. i don't recall the exact amount, but it was around $5500. he did seem very motivated and i got the impression that he would take alot less. my take was that the kids were long gone and they really had no use for the car.

as for beer, that won't be a problem. thats what the kegerator is for. the hard part is staying sober enough to finish the job.

that sounds exactly like the 80 that i picked up here in Auburn... even the passenger side seat motor was seized...
I bought it for $3000 fixed alot of little crap and then sold it for more to madafrican... he has fixed even more little things on it and now has a SOLID 96

3K was the number i had in my head to offer. if i had more space, i'd probably jump on it. as it is, i'll need to sell my car to make room for whatever i get.

Off the top of my head I can't think of anything in the birf job that requires the slightest bit of sobriety.

I can't tell you the last time I've looked in my front axle sober... wait... nope.

I'ma be honest witchya, a great place to do a front axle tear down would be right at uabericm's garage door... as close as possible to the garage refrigerator.

That's the tits! (or utters)!

We need both!

hmm...this might be popular at events:

LOL. We have found our trail leader!

That would be good as long as we get it out of the driveway before the beer runs out.

I see your point. Maybe we should just meet there and discuss an axle teardown.
Next meeting I come to, I'm not driving back to Auburn....
