I just picked up a 97 gen3 4runner. WHOO HOO!!

Question about the FJ80 rear coils. I know from searching that they can give you anywhere 3.5inches to 4.5inches depending on coils. I don't really wanna go that big but a little more modest like a 2.5inch. With that being said, Can't you just cut the bottom coils to get a little more of a smaller lift? Cutting off 1/2 off the bottom of the spring would probably give you a 2.5inch lift right?

Has anyone done this to get a lower lift?

Only reason why I'm asking is in my shed there are a pair of free springs that came from my gazzguzzzling FJ.

Also what kinda wheel travel do you get with these springs on a runna. With some pictures that I saw around 12-14 inches. What kinda shocks will give you the most travel? I'm not looking for Kings or Fox's, but low budget 39.00 es9000's. They were fine for my FJ80 with crazy flex from ome's J springs.

*or you can just get a set from a FJ Cruiser like I did and net that 2.5" lift you're talking about. Quite a few people have gone that route after a couple of us out here did it. You get the leveling effect and keep an appropriate spring rate at the same time.

Slap on a front coil-over spacer to match and you're good to go.

Cutting springs brings a whole set of nightmares into the equation, trust me here. It messes up the spring rate, ability to properly capture it in the bucket/pocket, and weakens it overall.

thanks Norcal. I'll do some research on the fj cruiser springs. (as I have a set that I was supposed to put on my 2006) ... Yet, as I recall... Aren't the rear/front FJ springs narrower than the rear coils springs that we have on the 3rd gens?

I got some rear cruiser coils on mine. I bought the skyjacker scratch n dent shocks off their website for like $30 each. The ride is soooo much better than the factory setup.

I never measured any travel I get with this setup, but it flexes pretty good.
